Biography

Sir Charles Arthur Roe (1841–1926) was a colonial administrator and Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court between the years 1895 and 1898.

He was born in Dorset, England to John Banister Roe on 4 September 1841 and educated at Lancing in Sussex followed by Merton College, Oxford before taking up a post with the Indian Civil Service in Bengal in 1862.

He was appointed Assistant Commissioner of the Punjab in 1863, Deputy Commissioner in 1878 and Additional Commissioner in 1883. A series of judicial appointments followed culminating in his appointment as Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court in 1895. He was also appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of the Punjab, Lahore. Roe was created Knight Bachelor in 1897 and died in Oxford, England, in 1926.

He is buried as are all the Roe’s at Tarrant Rushton in Dorset. When his son who became Sir Charles Roe introduced his sister to a friend of his and brought him down to the red House in Blandford , his comment was "Oh I do not want her to marry a missionary they are no good, they never make any money". However he was shocked when she said "Well dad, I am going to marry him anyway, after all I am now 16 so can make up my own mind". JB was a prosperous wool merchant.[1]
