Jonathan was born in 1849, son of John Rogers. He was born while the family lived in Mariposa Twp, Victoria county but a few years later they moved back to Yonge Street where his father had been born and raised.
Jonathan took a great interest in field sports and was the fastest runner at school. He always entered in the holiday sports on the Fair Ground and was a keen competitor with the late W.E. Johnson champion athlete of Canada who was raised at Glenville.
Jonathan left the farm in 1879 and commenced working for the Northern Railway, beginning as a brakeman on the freight trains and working his way up to the passenger section where he was a conductor. After 27 years of railroad work he took on a position as Inspector with Barnardo Homes in Toronto.
Jonathan married Sarah Armitage in 1871 and they one child, a daughter who died at the age of 21. Jonathan died on the anniversary of his 77th birthday - 13 May 1926, and was buried in Newmarket Cemetery.
