Biography

Catherine Rogers was reared in Georgia.[1] Jackson County, Georgia, records show that in 1823 she married George W. Lafferry, from Lancaster Co, PA. In 1824, their first child was born in Hall County, Georgia, shortly before they moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee, where their remaining children were born. The land they owned in Hamilton County Tennessee would later be where the battles of Chattanooga and Chickamauga were fought to during the Civil War.

Children: Catherine and George were the parents of seven children.[2] The 1830 U.S. Census documents the ages of their three sons, James R, John Wesley and WIlliam C. Lafferry. Also living with Catherine and George is a woman 50 to 60 years old. This woman no longer lives with the couple at the time of the 1840 census. By 1840 the couples' three sons are still living (they all will live to have families of their own) and now the family has four daughters. There are no additional records for the youngest daughter (born between 1835 and 1840). The two middle daughters are Sarah and Julia Ann. The 1840 census documents that their oldest daughter was born between 1825 and 1830. The name of this daughter isn't certain. The 1850 Census shows a 20 year old Nancy Lafferry living with John Wesley and William C. Lafferry. It's likely Nancy is William's wife, not the eldest daughter of George and Catherine.

Research Notes

Further research is required to source the assertion Catherine Rogers was Cherokee.

Some ancestry trees mistakenly say her parents are Robert J Rogers and Lucy Cordery. While this couple had a daughter named Catherine Rogers, born circa 1809 in Georgia, she married a McDaniel.

Some say her grandfather (Rogers) was at the Battle of King's Mountian. If so, these men should be considered....
