Notes

Note NI2222From FAMILIE OF DALLAS, LOURENS, ROGERS AND SOME OF THEIR RELATIVES.:
William Rogers, 1777-1836, was a physician and surgeon, a farmer, a minister and presiding elder of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was one of the greatest preachers of his time in East Tennessee. According to family tradition, he could quote verbatim most of the Bible. Dr. William Rogers was ordained by Bishop Francis Asbury 1745-1816, first U.S. Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
About 1800, just before his second child was born, William Rogers bought 1,260 acres in the area of Powell Valley, Campbell County and Claiborne County, Tennessee. On the main wagon road traversing the two counties, about 17 miles northeast of LaFollette TN, William and his father, John Rogers, 1757-1822, began building a two-storied, log house of hewn yellow poplar. The house was finished about 1805. Later, William build a more luxurious house in the Valley.
After William's death in 1836, his sons sold the first log house with some acreage to a Sowders' family. Soon afterward, Sowders sold it to a Kincaid family. In 1863, when Confederate Kincaid families moved out of Powell Valley, the house was bought by Wiliam Smith Wilson. In 1907, . . . the house was bought by Jefferson Dunn.
About 1945, to accommodate widening of the main road [Tennessee Highway 63], the Dunns dismantled the house, log by log, and moved it a few yards from its original location. Every log was placed back exactly as it was. The interior, with its beautiful old overhead joists and the rare staircase leading to the second story, is just as it was.
