Goulburn Evening Post (NSW : 1940 - 1954), Tuesday 10 June 1952. [1] DEATH OF MR GEORGE ROGERS. A Fine Citizen Passes. The death occurred last night of Mr George Albert Rogers, a member of one of the best known of Goulburn's families. Mr. Rogers, who was in his 80th year, had been in failing health for some time and he passed away in the Goulburn Base Hospital after being there for a few weeks. Mr. Rogers, a son of the late Charles Rogers, founder of the great firm which bears his name, was one of those unobtrusive gentlemen who refused to let his right hand know what his left was doing; he certainly never sought publicity and his many works for the good of the community consequently were. unknown. Born in Goulburn, he entered the business in his youth and remained in it until his retirement in 1946. He had been a member of the firm for fifty years and chairman of directors for 20 years. His ability to carry on the great work started by his father was manifestly demonstrated, but it was in other directions that the worth. of Mr. Rogers showed itself. If a project was to be started which would be likely to benefit Goulburn, the late Mr. Rogers never hesitated to put his money into it. So it was that he became director of the Goulburn Woollen mills. The company was not a success, but it was a legacy to the community. With others he endeavoured as a member of the Chats bury Slate Quarries to capitalise for the community the deposit of slate there. For a time it seemed that the company would succeed and there are many roofs in Goulburn still showing the worth of the slate there. He was also concerned in the Scotsdale Mining Company. The legacy there is the great in situation at Captain's Flat, one of the biggest mines of its kind in the State. Mr. George Rogers played his part in the foundation of these concerns. Mr. Rogers was a member of the Mechanics' Institute for 70 years and for many years was a member of the committee. He was associated with the Liedertafel and the various organisations which go to make up the life of a city like Goulburn. He always took the keenest interest in the welfare of all of them. He was a fine citizen, one who appreciated what others were doing around him, helped them where he could and never had a word of criticism to offer when he knew the intentions were aimed at bettering the city. He was one of nature's gentlemen and Goulburn is the poorer for his passing. Mr. Rogers was a great sports man and by reason of his de termination always, succeeded in whatever line of sport it might be. He was a first class tennis player; cycling claimed his early days. He was a fine gunshot and was a fisherman after tunney in the days before 'the capture of a big fish made headlines in the city press. At bowls he was a champion, holding the local championship and being runner-up in the State championship. He was a fine player on the golf links and a champion in the B grade there. He and the late Mr. Les Wheatley for many years never missed a Saturday on the links together. As a billiard player he was outstanding and was a champion at snooker, holding; the championship of the State. Of later years, he turned more and more to his beloved garden and the work he did there made of his home a place of ever charming beauty. Mr. Rogers leaves a wife, who was Miss Bertha Roberts, daughter of the late Mr. Charles Roberts, of "Mayfield," Braidwood, and Goulburn. Members of the family are Bruce (Sydney), Jean (Mrs. Bailey. Flowers, of Queensland), Betty (Mrs Brundahl, Rose Bay), Rose (Mrs. Young, Townsville), and Malcolm (Willowtree). Another son, Flight-Lieutenant Kenneth R. Rogers, of the R.A.F. predeceased him. Mr. Rogers was the third son of the late Mr. Charles Rogers. Two brothers, Jim and Charles, predeceased him. Other brothers are Messrs. Percy Rogers (Victoria), and Mr. Russell Rogers (Goulburn). Another brother Norman, also predeceased him. The late Mrs. P. J. Meyer was a sister and Mrs. J. Bourke.
