Biography

Jonathan Rogers, son of James and Elizabeth Rowland Rogers, was born, Jan. 7, 1656, the records are at Milford Connecticut but he may have been born at Stratford. He died —, 1697. He was drowned near Gull Island.

He married Mar. 2, 1678, Naomi, daughter of Robert and Ruth (Hubbard) Burdick of Newport, Rhode Island. He was baptized in New London, Mar. 2, 1674—5, by Elder William Hiscox of Newport, and immediately following the baptism, Jonathan and his brothers, James and John, were received as members of the Newport church, having been baptized some time previous by Mr. John Crandall of Westerly, R. I. (Hubbard's Record.)

His widow married (2) Mar. 11, 1703, John, son of William and Agnes Keeney, as his second wife. Jonathan Rogers lived upon a farm on the Great Neck, given him by his father, which was also owned by his son Jonathan. The stone house occupied by the latter is still standing near the site of the house built by his father.

The accepted tradition of his accidental death is as follows: He had shot a seal and went for it on a log. He attached one end of a rope to the seal and the other end to his own body, in order to have free use of his hands. The seal revived in the struggle, and Mr. Rogers was drawn under water and held there. 1t is further stated that his son Jonathan, twelve years of age, was with his father and saw him go down. According to the record, the son could have been but seven years old, unless, as some of the descendants claim, he was born in 1683 or '84.[1][2]

Research Note

  1. ) 2018-09-28 The Rogers Genealogy Reference [1] does not identify either Hannah nor Bethia as children of Jonathan and Naomi Rogers. Furthermore the birth dates assigned (as of Sept 2018) to the Wikitree profiles for Hannah and Bethia precede the marriage of Jonathan and Bethia. Therefore, there are one of a few options for these two children. 1) They are the daughters of previous marriage; 2) They are not the daughters of Jonathan and Naomi. This appears highly probable as the 1669 birth date cited in the Wikitree profile for Hannah (as of Sept 2018) would have been at a time when Jonathan was only 13 years of age; 3) They were illegitimate, or 4) They were born much later than alleged--the will of Will of Wm Beebe supports this idea. Therefore until a credible source has been identified to link Hannah Beebe as a daughter of Jonathan Rogers, she has been removed as a child of Jonathan and Naomi and her maiden name has been changed to "Unknown." Furthermore, the assertion that Jonathan and Naomi had a daughter, Bethia Rogers, born in 1676 would also appear to be exceedingly questionable, because they were not married until 2 Mar 1678, and no reliable source has been found nor cited to link Bethia as one of their children.
