Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Ann (Rogers) Witt was a Virginia colonist.

Ann Rogers was born about 1680 in Charles City County, Virginia Colony. She was the daughter of John Rogers and Elizabeth Unknown. She passed away after 1730 in Charles City County.

Birth

No birth record has been found. Year of birth is based on birth of her oldest known son, John, born about 1700.

Marriage

John married about 1695 in Charles City County. This is partially determined by his age and the birth dates of his children. There are questions about John's marriage. The Harbour-Witt Bulletin 6.2, with some uncertainty, names Lavina as John's wife. He was certainly married to Ann Rogers in 1730, but some think she may have been a second wife.[1] The will of John Rogers of Westover Parish, Charles City County, recorded on 5 August 1730, left livestock and other items to his daughter Ann Whitt, wife of John Whitt.[2]

Death

No death record or burial site has been found. She was living at the time her father's will was recorded in 1730. In 1732 and 1734, John was living with their son John in King William Parish, Charles City County.[3] This might indicate Ann had died, but it is not certain.

John sold land in 1747. Ann is not listed in the deed waiving her dower rights as would normally occur.[4] When John died his son John III inherited the half interest in land purchased by John and his brother William in 1715. This half interest was sold by William and John III in 1751. Elizabeth, the wife of John III, waived her dower rights in the deed. Ann did not. This would certainly indicate she died before 1751, and probably before 1747. The best that can be said is Ann died before 1747 and possibly before 1732.

There may have been more than one John Witt and more than one Ann Rogers in the colonies in those times and any merges should take this into consideration. While John Rogers and Elizabeth Pabodie may have had a daughter named Ann who married a man named John Witt, we cannot assume this is the same Ann based on their names.

The Descendants of Robert Whytt [1] says Ann was the daughter of John and Martha, born 1674, and that she married John Witt, the grandson of Robert Whytt. it further states that Ann was married about 1705. This supports the theory that she may have been a second wife of John as some of his children were born before the turn of the century.

ancestry's millenium file says mother was Elizabeth and father John. some have jumped to the conclusion that Elizabeth was a Pabodie and linked this line to the Mayflower Rogers. I can find no proof of this. also the millenium file says her birth year was 1665. The accuracy of this information is dependent on your faith in the millenium file.

Unknown-122263 and Rogers-230 appear to represent the same person because: Married to same husband, John Witt.
Rogers-1314 and Rogers-230 appear to represent the same person because: Although birth and death dates differ and need to be reconciled, they are the same person, married to same husband.
