MRS. HANNAH DALTON - MANY YEARS AT PUKEKOHE - NO SERIOUS ILLNESSES
A centenarian, Mrs. Hannah Dalton, died on Saturday evening at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. J. Heffernan, at 115 Newton Road.
Born in Belfast in September 1833, Mrs. Dalton came to New Zealand with her husband, Mr. David Dalton, in the sailing ship Ganges in 1865, the voyage taking four months.
After living for a short time at Tuakau, they were engaged in farming at Pukekohe, where they resided for many years and had a large circle of acquaintances. Mrs. Dalton was a well-known member of the Pukekohe Anglican Church. Mr. Dalton died 19 years ago.
Until about four months ago, when her health began to fail, Mrs. Dalton retained her faculties to a remarkable degree. She had a wonderful memory and used to recount graphic incidents of the old pioneering days. Mrs. Dalton came to Auckland nine years ago, since when she had resided with her daughter in Newton Road. Enjoying keen eyesight, she passed the time by sewing and knitting, and read widely. She keenly enjoyed reading the newspapers, taking a great interest in current affairs. She had never experienced a serious illness.
Mrs. Dalton is survived by three sons, Mr. D. Dalton. of Wellington and Messrs. J. Dalton and R. Dalton of Pukekohe; and four daughters, Mrs. J. Heffernan of Auckland, Mrs. A. Berriman of Pukekohe, Mrs. T. Saulbrev of Wellington, and Mrs. P Guthrie of Sydney. There are a number of grandchildren and great-grand-children.
