Biography

Josiah Rogers (an alternate spelling found in records is Rodgers) was born to John and Martha Hill Rogers in Bertie, North Carolina in about 1745. There are trees that list a middle name of Hill, which was his mother’s maiden name, however no documented historical records have been found to date that list any middle name. It is also important to note that middle names were not common at the time he was born.

Josiah married Francis Hargraves. (NOTE: some family trees list a Josiah Rogers marrying a Peggy Mcelyes on 12 Sep 1814 in Wilson, Tennessee, however, that is not possible because it was after the death of the Josiah Rogers in this record.)

Josiah Rogers fought in the Revolutionary War [1]

On 1 Nov 1784, a Josiah Rogers received a land grant for 300 Acres in Chatham County, North Carolina. [2]

The 1790 census [3] lists the following in the household of Josiah Rogers: 2 males under 16, 3 males 16 and over and 2 females with a total of 7 in the house.

The 1800 census for Josiah Rogers [4] lists the following number of persons in the household: Free White Persons: Males 16 thru 25: (1), Males 45 and over: (1), Females 45 and over: (1), Number of Slaves: (4), Number of Household Members Over 25: (2), Number of Household Members: (7)

The 1810 census for Josiah Rodgers [5] lists the following number of persons in the household: Free White Persons - Males 26 thru 44 (1), Females Under 10 (4), Females 16 thru 25 (1), Number of Household Members Under 16 (4) and over 25 (1), Total Household Members (6).

It is believed that Josiah died around the time of August 1813. [6] Josiah Rogers signed his will on 5 May 1812. His wife Francis and children are named in the will. The will was probated in Chatham County, North Carolina in August 1813 indicating he died around that time. [7]
