Thomas was probably born in the 1470s or 1480s, son of Sir Henry Rogers of Bryanston, Dorset,[1] and his wife, a daughter of William, Lord Stourton whose name is variously given as Anne, Amy, or Avice Stourton.[2] He appears in the list of Sir Henry's children in a manuscript of noble genealogies compiled circa 1505,[3] and also in Henry's will, dated 14 Dec 1506, which grants him £6 per annum for life.[4] Beyond this, little is known of him.
J. L. Chester's detailed biography and genealogy of John Rogers the Martyr repeats a theory that this Thomas is Thomas Rogers of Bradford-on-Avon.[5] This is demonstrably incorrect as Thomas of Bradford's eldest son was born in the late 1450s, only a decade later than Sir Henry, his alleged grandfather.
