Notes

Note NI1208 From FAMILIES OF DALLAS, LOURENS, ROGERS AND SOME OF THEIR RELATIVES:
David Franklin Rogers was a physician and a country surgeon, widely known throughout Powell Valley, Campbell County and Claiborne County, Tennessee. He was familiarly called "Doc" Rogers.
In 1875, he bought the farm on which was located the exceptional 13-room Rock House, built by slaves at the close of the 18th century for Thomas LMcClain. Behind the house were slaves' log cabins. After the Civil War, many blacks continued to live in the cabins, working on the farm.
To call on patients to treat their illnesses, Doc rode horseback throughout the Valley's country roads, lanes, and paths. A special little black boy always rode with him behind the saddle, ready to jump off to open and shut gates.
David Franklin Rogers was very fond of children. In addition to educating his own, he helped educate several grandchildren. After Sally Ann (Rogers) Branscom's death, her children lived in the Rock House with their grandparents, Elizabeth (Hampton) and Doc Rogers.
