Flag of American Colonies

"John Rogers (1630-1684), the eldest son (of Nathaniel Rogers and Margaret Crane), baptised at Coggeshall, Essex, on 23 Jan. 1630, emigrated with his father to New England in 1636. He graduated at Harvard University in 1649 in theology and medicine, and commenced to practice the latter at Ipswich. But he afterwards became assistant to his father in the church of the same place, and abandoned medicine. He was chosen president of Harvard in April 1682, to succeed Urian Oakes, was inaugurated in 1683, but died on 2 July 1684 at Cambridge,[1][2] aged 53, and was succeeded by Increase Mather. He married Elizabeth, daughter of General Daniel Denison and Patience Dudley, at Ipswich on 14 November 1660.[3] He left a numerous family in America, three sons being ministers, the youngest, John Rogers of Ipswich, himself leaving three sons, all ministers." Folklore Disproved

In 1853, the Louisville, Kentucky Courrier- Journal carried the following:[5]

"The following interesting obituary notice appears in a late Massachusetts page:
"A Descendant of John Rogers the Martyr.-- Died in Royalston, the 3d inst., Mrs. Eunice, wife of Benoni Peck, Esq., aged 65. Mrs. Peck was daughter of Eliphalet Rogers, who was son of Rev. John Rogers, pastor of the first church in Ipswich, and president of Harvard College, who died July 2, 1684. This gentleman was the eldest son of Rev. Nathaniel Rogers, came from England in 1636, and settled in Ipswich as colleague pastor with Rev. Nathaniel Ward, who died July 2, 1655, aged 57. Nathaniel Rogers was a son of Rev. John Rogers, of Dedham, England, who died October 18, 1639, aged 67, and John was grandson of the Rev. John Rogers the Martyr, who was burnt at Smithfield, Feb. 5, 1555, nearly three centuries ago."

The "tradition" of descent from John Rogers the Martyr has long been disproved see notes on the profile of father Nathaniel

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA test-takers in his direct paternal line. Mitochondrial DNA test-takers in the direct maternal line: It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Rogers is not one of the 240 Gateway Ancestors documented by Richardson's Magna Carta Ancestry and so is considered by the Magna Carta project to be Questionable gateway ancestor. Despencer-26 is not a surety baron (was given in the Magna Carta project box template as the surety baron whom Rogers was descended from).

I edited this profile on behalf of the Magna Carta project (removing the project/adding appropriate project category).

There are problems with this profile:

1. John was born in England and came to Massachusetts at age 6, about 1636. See: http://www.harvard.edu/about-harvard/harvard-glance/history-presidency/john-rogers

2. John was the son of Nathaniel Rogers, not John Rogers and wife Grace. (Not a good source, but see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Rogers_%28Harvard%29)

3. John, the son of John and Grace, died in infancy. See: Dictionary of National Biography, Vol. 29, pg. 132 https://archive.org/stream/dictionaryofnati49stepuoft#page/131/mode/1up

John should be removed from John and Grace as son. Is it OK if I do it?
