Both the International Genealogical Index (submitted records) and Pedigree Resource File contain entires reporting an Anthony Ashby as the son of Thomas Ashby and Mary Rogers.[1] Those submittals and other family files that sport references sometimes cite a family group sheet by "Robert L. Ashby, of American Fork, Utah." A family group sheet by that author was published in Ashby and Badger Ancestry (1955)--works consulted were reported, but no such parents are therein attributed to Anthony Ashby.[2]
Quite separately, the marriage of a Thomas Ashby to Mary Rogers, 23 December 1627 at Newport, Shropshire, England) appears in FamilySearch Historical collections,[3] but no further historical references have been seen by which to identify either the bride or groom, or to associate them as the parents of Anthony Ashby known of Salem, Massachusetts, and Connecticut.
In his 1955 narrative about Anthony Ashby, Robert L. Ashby wrote about his ancestral work, saying "As to where Anthony Ashby came from we are left to conjector .. We are unable to find his name on the passenger lists of vessels ... Anthony could have been the son of Thomas who was drowned in New Haven harbor, Conn. in 1640 ...[or] the son of Richard Ashby in Acton in Claines and his wife Ellinor ...."[4]
Robert L. Ashby continued, reporting he had been unable to verify an 1885 research note by Jonathan Jefferies Ashby, who is said to have written[5]
The records of the town of Salem, Mass., U.S.A., show that there was living in that town between the years A.D.1626 (the time Salem was founded) and 1639, two men, viz: Thomas and Edmund Ashby. Tradition says they emigrated from England.
Of his attempts to confirm the note, Robert L. Ashby wrote, "I have tried to verify this statement every way I can, but to no avail. I have employed researchers on several occasions to search the records of Salem and surrounding towns, but they fail to find anything that would substantiate this."[6]
No article concerning such early immigrants, either Thomas Ashby (soundex) or Edmund Ashby (soundex), is found among the published volumes of the Great Migration Study Project.[7] An article appears there for "Alice Ashby," who enrolled for passage aboard the Defence in June 1635[8] The trio of authors responsible for the article about "Alice Ashby" found no reference to her in New England.[9]
No record has been identified reporting the death at Salem, Massachusetts, 1693 for a "Mary Ashby."[10] The date as 1694 is likely the abbreviate form of a death reported for Anthony's "mother" Mary in Pedigree Resource File as "Salem, Massachusetts, 26 November 1694."[11] The latter is the same date of death reported for the woman linked in the same file as Anthony's mother-in-law, there as "Alice (Bosworth) Hutchinson.[12] It is proposed that this death information is erroneous for both of the woman.
Anthony Ashby's mother-in-law, Alice (the first wife of Richard Hutchinson), almost certainly died before 1668, for Richard married again that year to Susanna/Susan (_____) Archer, the widow of Samuel Archer.[13]
The Pedigree Resource File entry regarding Alice's death (thus, as above, the confused entry about death of "Mary") seems likely an mis-transcribed/mis-applied entry about Richard Hutchinson's second wife. Susanna (_____) (Archer) Hutchinson died Salem 26 November 1674.[14]
