Biography

Nicholas was born about 1749. He passed away about 1797.

Name

That he used the name Gassaway is apparent from the fact that his name appears as Gassaway Rogers in the vast majority of contemporary documents. I have seen reference to one document where it appears as N. Gassaway, and one where it appears as Nicholas. The name usually appears as Gassaway, but is also occasionally seen as Gasway, Gaseway, Gazaway, and Gazey. Gassaway was his mother's maiden name and, as was fairly common in this era, the unusual middle name is likely in honor of her family, and particularly, her father, Major Nicholas Gassaway. He also had a son, Nicholas Gassaway Rogers, Jr. Doliante (see below) mentions him only as Gassaway Rogers.

Notes

From Doliante, p. 558:
Con’t issue of James and Martha (Prather) Odell:
iv. Margaret Odell, mentioned in the Distribution of Estate papers of her deceased father as “Margaret Rogers” – therefore, by 1779, she had m. one _____ Rogers. It appears her husband was Gassaway Rogers. It appears that her husband was Gassaway Rogers, and that they settled very soon in the Laurens-Newberry Co., S.C. area, along with other members of the family. Gassaway Rogers witnessed several deeds for the Odell &/or Duckett family, in the late 1700s, in S.C., and on a survey of Thomas Duckett's land in this area, his name appears on the plat as an adjoining neighbor. [Post Rev. Plats, vol. 21q, p. 144, S.C. Archives, op. cit.]
On Mar. 6, 1795, "Gassaway Rodgers & Margaret his wife, of Laurens Co.,S.C., made over to Wm. Patridge, Joel Whitten, Joseph Whitmore, Thomas Duncan, Daniel Young, Henry Hill, Joseph Jones, John Robertson, & John Whitten, Trustees appointed by the Methodist Episcopal Church to receive and take a conveyance of a lot of land of 3 acres for the use of said church..." for 10 shillings..."a part of a tract of 180 acres in Laurens Co., on a small branch of Enoree River, which was granted to said Gassaway Rogers..." /s/ Gassaway Rogers, Margaret Rogers. Wit: George Whitmore, JP; Jacob Ducket Masters (clearly a son of Notley & Margaret (Duckett) Masters); Henry Davis. [Bk. F, p. 37, Laurens Co., S.C.] (NOTE:It is believed that the church spoken of herein, was Odell's Methodist Church, of which only the graveyard now remains.)
On Mar. 11, 1795, an indenture was made between James Odell of Laurens District, S.C. and Gassaway Rodgers of same...for 3 a. on Enoree River... for 10 shillings paid to me by the said Gassaway Rogers...being part of a tract of 200 a. which was granted to John Odell on 22nd March, 1769...given by John Odell unto his son the said James Odell and to his heirs.../s/ Janes Odell. Wit: John Odell (X his mark), Nich. G. Rogers, Martha Odell (X her mark). Proved, June 20, 1812. [Bk. I, p. 268, Laurens Co.]
Gassaway Rogers was apparently deceased by the time of the 1800 Census for Laurens Co., at which time Margaret was listed with eight children, all unknown to this compiler.

From RogersDNA.com, citing Genealogical History of the Gassaway Family, by William K. and Anna Clay Rutherford - 1981.
Reviewing the above book, page #132: SUSANNA GASSAWAY, daughter of Major Nicholas Gassaway, son of Capt. Thomas Gassaway, son of Col. Nicholas Gassaway, son of Thomas Gassaway.
SUSSANA GASSAWAY, was born abt. 1740, Queen Caroline Parish, Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Sussana married John Rogers. He was the son of Samuel and Joan Rogers. Sussana Gassaway and John Rogers were married in Anne Arundel Co., Md. Their children were:
1. Anne Rogers
2. Catherine Rogers
3. Nicholas Gassaway Rogers***
4. Samuel Rogers
There is no further mention of Nicholas Gassaway Rogers on this page, but his brother, Samuel Rogers, is listed as being born in South Carolina. Thus, I assume Nicholas Gassaway Rogers was too.
And, from the same page:
He [is] found in the DAR library, file #762665 on Gassaway Rogers:
Gassaway was born abt 1750 in Anne Arundel Co., Md. Died at Newberry County, S.C. on Mar 11, 1795. Married Margaret Odell, their known children:
Samuel b. abt 1771 sp Mary Williams
Margaret, b. abt 1790 sp Honorias Sheppard
Gassaway Jr., b. abt 1781-90 sp Sophronia Burnett

There is much more on the webpage linked above. There are also some good research notes discussing date problems, with sources, in a genealogy blog, The Salt of America.

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Nicholas by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA test-takers in his direct paternal line. Mitochondrial DNA test-takers in the direct maternal line: It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Nicholas:

Rodgers-3492 and Rogers-9993 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, same parents, same death data

Rodgers-3492, Nicholas Rodgers, has the same name (Rogers/Rodgers spelling variation would be common in 18th century) and exact date/location of death. BUT a very different date of birth, 1760 vs. 1749. I have suggested an unmerged match

This profile has been flagged with the following alert: "A birth date (Rogers-9993 born 1760) should not be more than 60 years before or after a sibling's birth date (Rogers-9995 born 26 Apr 1854)"

Your assistance to review these dates is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Rodgers-3492 and Rogers-6698 appear to represent the same person because: Same place and time; same spouses. The primary issue is spelling of “Rogers” surname. The Rogers line that migrated from South Carolina to Henry County GA adopted “Rodgers” as the spelling. Otherwise, the facts seem to be duplicate.
