Deborah Sammis is a fairly popular choice for the first wife of Jonathan Rogers, passing away (1740?) before his better-documented marriage to Mary Barker in 1740. There is little doubt that Deborah is real, as she appears in father John Sammis’ will (1693). It also appears fairly certain that Elizabeth Rogers (husband of Richard Gildersleeve b. 1695) was the daughter of this Jonathan Rogers. The geography is perfect – all three families (Gildersleeve, Rogers, Sammis) were on Long Island’s north shore around Huntington Town (Northport) at the same time. The timing for a marriage between Deborah and Jonathan also works pretty well.
Deborah Sammis does appear in many secondary "sources" as the wife of Jonathan Rogers (e.g. Find-a-Grave, Long Island Surnames) and some family-generated biographies.
On the negative side, the marriage does not appear in any of the New England Marriages sources or any of the respected biographical sources.
Note that there is little agreement in the WikiTree profiles of these people: Deborah Sammis does not appear as Elizabeth Rogers’ mother, nor does Elizabeth appear as Deborah’s daughter. Moreover, Jonathan and Deborah are shown as husband and wife (the basis for this is unsourced), but only Jonathan is shown as a parent of Elizabeth.
Is anyone in the community aware of a reasonably reliable source or biography that could establish Deborah Sammis as the wife of Jonathan Rogers (and thus the mother of Elizabeth Rogers)? If so, we could bring the profiles into alignment. If not, they may need to be reconsidered. Much appreciated.
