Hazel was the eldest daughter of nine children born to Ada (See) and Frank Rogers. As such she was her mother's right hand in carrying out the domestic chores and helping to raise the younger children on the Rogers' farm. As a child, she clearly remembered the visits of her widowed grandmother, Mary (Lenon) See and wrote down the stories her grandmother told of her trip to the California Gold Rush in 1852. Her correspondence with Carol See Browning has provided a wonderful account of the various See siblings, most of whom lived on neighboring farms in Benton Co, IA.
She attended school through the 8th grade and later worked at a Mercantile company.
When Hazel was 28, she married widower Jack Raitt and helped raise his 2 sons, along with her own daughter, Penny. She loved to garden and offered her musical talents to the First Christian Church in Vinton, by playing the organ and singing in the choir.
She died just 2 1/2 yrs before her 100th birthday and is buried in the Brandon Cemetery with her parents, and many other family members.
