Biography

Leah Romans Wilder was born to Pieter Milo and Catherine Jannetje Van Dusen in Albany, New York on the 24 of January in 1787. She was baptised into the Reformed Dutch Church of Albany, New York on the 25 of Feburary of that year. She was the first child born to Pieter and Catherine and spent the first years of her life in Albany. In 1810 her family is found living in Maryland, Otsego County, New York. Here is where she probably met Charles Wilder, Jr, whose family was in Worcester, New York. Maryland was created from a section of Worcester in about 1808. I have a marriage date of January 9, 1814 for Charles and Leah, but when I added it to my ancestry.com tree, I wasn't careful about citing sources, so I can't be sure that's the actual date. It does fit with when their first child was born, which was the 12th of November, 1815, in Maryland, New York. The couple went on to have at least 7 children that I've been able to document, but there's probably one more daughter whom I haven't found as yet. The 1820 Census of Maryland, Otsego County, New York lists 4 females: 3 are under the age of 10, 1 is aged 10 through 14. The family is also found in the 1830 Federal Census for the same place. The last child I can find was a daughter born in 1829, when Leah was 42. Leah died in 1831 at the age of 44 and is buried in the Schenevus Cemetery in Schenevus, Otsego County, New York.
