Biography

Maud de Roos (or Ros) was the daughter of William de Ros, 2nd Lord Roos of Helmsley, by Margery de Badlesmere.[1][2][3] Her date and place of birth are unknown and are estimated.

Maud married John de Welle (or Welles), Knt., 4th Lord Welles,[1] son and heir of Adam de Welle (or Welles), Knt., 3rd Lord Welles, by his wife, Margaret.[2] The date and place of their marriage are unknown and are estimated. They had one son and two daughters:

  • John, Knt., 5th Lord Welles, born 20 April 1352 at Conisholme, Lincolnshire, died 26 August 1421, married Eleanor Mowbray and had issue, married second Margaret (or Margery) _____[2]
  • Margery, married first John de Huntingfield, second Sir Stephen le Scrope, 2nd Lord Scrope[2]
  • Anne, married James le Boteler (or Butler), 3rd Earl of Ormond[2]

Sir John de Welles died 11 October 1361. His widow Maud, Lady Welles, died 9 December 1388.[2][3]

Seal

Description provided by Douglas Richardson (via Gen-Medieval forum) from Walter de Gray Birch's Catalogue of Seals, Volume 3, page 651, (1894); Repository: British Museum:[4]
evidently taken from a 1373 document "...seal of Matildis de Well' [Maud de Welles], who he identified as being the widow of Sir John de Well[es], of Lincolnshire.... According to Mr. Birch, the seal has a shield of arms on it. The dexter side (usually reversed for the husband's arms) is uncertain. The sinister side (usually reserved for the woman's arms) display the arms of Roos, namely three water-bougets, two and one."

  4. taken from a 2004 Gen-Medieval Rootsweb post by Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah. Context for the description provided in a fuller extract:

...I showed that Maud de Welles' grandson, Henry le Scrope, was styled "kinsman" by King Henry V of England. Again, assuming that Maud de Welles was a Roos, King Henry V of England and Henry le Scrope would be related in the 4th and 4th degrees of kinship (that is 3rd cousins), by virtue of common descent from Bartholomew de Badlesmere, Knt., 1st Lord Badlesmere (died 1322).

At that point, a deadend seemed to be hit. Recently, however, I was going through the fascintating multi-volume series, Catalogue of Seals in the British Museum, by Walter de Gray Birch. In Volume 3 (1894), pg. 651, Mr. Birch included the description of a surviving seal of a certain Matildis de Well' [Maud de Welles], who he identified as being the widow of Sir John de Well[es], of Lincolnshire. This would be Maud, wife of John de Welles, 4th Lord Welles. The seal was evidently taken from a document taken 1373, during the period of Lady [Welles]' widowhood. According to Mr. Birch, the seal has a shield of arms on it. The dexter side (usually reversed for the husband's arms) is uncertain. The sinister side (usually reserved for the woman's arms) display the arms of Roos, namely three water-bougets, two and one. I believe this seal is conclusive evidence that Maud de Welles was a Roos.

Special acknowledgement go to Mr. Walter de Gray Birch for his painstaking job of transcribing the details of thousands of medieval seals in the British Museum. Now that was a medieval genealogist!

update: extra children were removed.

and nope. still not sure where all the boys need to go. Maud de Roos & John had three children (John, Margery, & Anne); John & Eleanor Mowbray had just two kids (Eudo & Eleanor).

aha - I think they might be mis-attached duplicates for Maud's grandsons (by John, 5th Lord Welles).

I you have any information about "sons" William, Robert, Richard, and Roger, please share so that I can find them a home. They are not listed in Richardson's Royal Ancestry (just three children by John Welles: John, Margery, Anne). Thanks!
