Isaiah R. Rose was a Republican state senator for Ohio, a Washington County sheriff and a Civil War veteran.
Isaiah Rose was born on June 26, 1843 in Belmont County, Ohio.[1] His father was James H. Rose (1810-1880) and his mother, Mary Shaeffer Rose (1812-1872). He grew up in Adams Township, Washington, Ohio.[2] In 1860, he was working and his father were working as colliers. The family was living in Adams Township.[3]
He enlisted twice as a soldier for the Union Army, for three months the first time and for three years the second time.

He first enlisted at age 17 on 26 April 1861 in Company "K", 18th Ohio Infantry for a period of 3 months. He was mustered out on 28 August 1861 in Columbus, Ohio.
Isaiah reenlisted in Company "F," 63 Ohio Infantry on 17 December 1861, serving as a private for a 3 year period.[1], [4] In September 1864 he was captured and transported to Andersonville Prison in Georgia (now Andersonville National Historic Site) as a prisoner.[5], [6] He later escaped and returned to his former army unit. However, as he approached the Union Army, he was mistaken for a scout or a Confederate soldier and was shot in the right leg. This injury left him permanently disabled.[1]
He was discharged on 20 May 1865. He received a pension for his service, App. # 132610; Cert. # 91, 918. After his death, his wife continued to receive a pension until her death: Widow's App. #1,089,413; Cert. # 823,889.[1], [7], [8]
Isaiah returned to Ohio where he married Melissa Ellen Crawford on 8 September 1867 in Washington County.[9], [10] They had seven children.
In 1870, Isaiah, Melissa and their first child, Leslie, were living in Coal Run, Washington County. Isaiah was working as a coal miner.[11]
By 1880 they had four children. He was now working as a lightning rod agent.[12]
By 1900 they owned a farm in Washington County.[13]
The governor appointed Isaiah as a manager for the Ohio Penitentiary from 1896-1900.[14] He was elected Sheriff for Washington County as a member of the Republican Party. Later he was elected as a state senator for one term, losing reelection in 1908. During his career in the Ohio Senate. he was a champion of the temperance movement in Ohio, introducing ultimately successful legislation allowing individual counties to enact local legislation banning the sale of liquor.[15]
In 1910 Isaiah, Melissa and their youngest daughter, Louise, were living on their farm in Washington County, Ohio.[16]
Isaiah died at age 74 from pneumonia on 26 November 1916 in Waterford, Washington County, Ohio.[17], [18] He is buried in Round Bottom Cemetery in Coal Run, Ohio.[19].
