Biography

Ancêtre militaire Écossais. Il amena sa famille à Québec, et fut tue au cours de la guerre Canado-américaine de 1812-1814.

Born April 23, 1778, christening April 27, 1778 Quebec, Canada Vital Records (Drouin Collection) 1921-1968 William Ross death Oct 13, 1812 Lake Ontario

Father - John Ross born 1755 Scotland and mother Margaret Tulloch.

William / Guillaume Ross was a Scott and a sergeant in the 60th regiment in Quebec. That regiment was known as the American regiment. A very hard core group that fought during the American Revolution, the Napoloanic Wars, in Canada and the Caribbean. The regiment was made up of German, Swiss, Scottish and Irish soldiers. They could be almost considered as mercenaries. They dressed and fought in very unconventional ways for that time period. Their uniforms were dark green devoid of shiney brass, and they were equipped with rifles instead of the traditional smooth bore muskets. To rise to the rank of sergeant in a green jacket rifle regiment was a big deal. He was killed in the war of 1812/14. I am guessing at the Battle of Plattsburgh New York. William had a wife Charlotte Brown and one known son John/Jean born in Scotland in 1807 (?). There could have been more children and Charlotte Brown vanishes from history. Jean Ross (age 10?) comes to Caraquet to live with the family of Guillaume Chenard and is baptized into the Catholic Church April 11 1824. ( Would like to know his age at baptism) It seems that the Chenard family had a major history in Quebec founding St Roch des Aulnais. Was Guillaume Chenard a comrade from William Ross's military service? I do not know of the conditions of Jean Ross receiving that land grant, but the Crown gave land grants to solders that served and sons of solders that were killed in service.
