Biography

Davidson was born in 1831. He passed away in 1893.

Davidson and Nancy Ross made their home in Roane County, at Newton, WV. Davidson opened the first post office in his home on Feb. 26, 1857 and named the community "Newton" in honor of his son Isaac Newton Ross who was a small child. He was the postmaster for seven years, constable for two years and opened a mercantile store at Newton jointly owned by T.J. Ellis and James Keen. T. J. Ellis later became the postmaster of Newton.

Davidson Ross was baptized in October of 1858 and became a preacher of the Baptist faith in May of 1869 serving for 16 years in Newton as reported by his granddaughter Jackie Friend Perrine, whose parents were Millard F. and Nancy Ross.

Note: Rev. Davidson W. Ross- a native of Kentucky, born in Pike County, January 6, 1831, was a son of Reace A. and Isabella (Anderson) Ross. His mother died in January 1849. His marriage was solemnized in Kanawha County (then) Virginia, July 14, 1850, when Nancy Drake became his life companion. She was born in Pike County, Kentucky, June 8, 1833, a daughter of Isaac and Margaret (Bishop) Drake. Her father was born in 1801, her mother in 1806, and both are still living. The children of Mr. and Mrs. Ross are recorded: George Washington Ross., born April 14, 1851; William E.,June 30, 1853, died February 11, 1854; Isaac Newton Ross., February 9, 1855; Lewis Phillip "Phip" Ross., June 27, 1857; Millard Filmore Ross., June 11, 1859; Reace A. Ross, January 16, 1862, died November 18th following; Margaret I., December 25, 1863; Ulysses Simpson Ross, February 27, 1867; WestVirginia, August 19, 1869; Spurgeon Charles Ross, January24, 1872; Talitha Jane Ross, June 11, 1874, died December 24, 1875; Forest Rose Ross,April 26, 1878. Margaret Isabel "Ibby" Ross Kennedy resides in Gilmer County, West Virginia; the other living children in Roane County. Davidson W. Ross came to this county before its organization, and has served Roane County two years as constable, six years as justice of the peace, seven years as postmaster. He has been a minister of the Gospel in the faith of the Baptist Church for sixteen years, and has his pastoral charge at Newton, Roane County,West Virginia.
