Biography

According to attached document, which appears to come from Ernest L. Ross' Nathaniel Green Ross, Sr. Ancestors - Descendants and some Related Families[1] (see Excerpts), which states James:

  • was born in 1698 in Ireland
  • immigrated in 1724 America
  • Settled first in Virginia
  • Married Catherine McCallough in 1730
  • Then moved to Mecklenburg County North Carolina between Coddle Creek and Rocky River.
  • Finally to two miles north of Yorkville, York County, South Carolina.

According to the image, James and Catherine Ross had the following children:

  1. John McCullough Ross, b. 1731; m. Barbara Hogue, d/o George Hogue Sr.
  2. James Ross Jr, "Uncle Jimmy Ross," filed his will as James Ross Sr. He was one of the first residents of Yorkville, South Carolina, where it is said he built the second house in town. He kept an Inn and lived to be an elderly, much respected man; d. 1826; m. Delilah Alexander.
  3. Francis Ross, b. 1744, d. 31 Mar 1779; m. Rachel Love. Called "Gentleman Frank Ross." Francis served first as a private in the company commanded by his brother-in-law, John Miller, in the Revolutionary War; was later a Major in the militia; was killed in an Indian campaign. After his death, the children lived with "Uncle Jimmy Ross."
  4. Col. George Ross, m. Sarah Sutton. Col. George Ross lived most of his life in York Co, SC, where he was executor of his brother (Uncle Jimmy Ross)'s will.He then seems to have moved to Tennessee.
  5. William Ross lived seven miles from York Co, SC, Src: Love Family Historical and Genealogical Quarterly, v.III, Apr 1956
  6. Jane Ross, m.1. Thomas Martin. m.2. John Miller, who was a Captain in the Revolutionary War.
  7. Sarah Ross, m. William Ervin, an early settler in York Co, SC.

Notes

  • Death location is assumed due to his children still residing in York County through 1800.

HI Kay,

Thanks for replying...

Using Charles Brashear's "George Ross Revolutionary Soldier" which I assume contains the same information as Charles Brashear's "Descendants of Francis Ross" book, which is referenced above, Brashear includes this information (p.7): A) "James Ross, b. 1698. Ireland; migrated to S.C. perhaps by way of Virginia; m. Catherin McCullough and had seven children (the lists them)" B) "James Ross Sr., b. in Ireland, 1698, 1st s/o Francis Ross, landed at Port Royal, South Carolina, in 1724. He married Catherine McCullough, and they had seven children (the lists them). C) The intro to Chapter 2 discusses their migration to York County, SC.

Additionally, Dr Moore in his "Reminiscences of York" talks about James' son, Francis "Gentleman Frank," which reinforces their migration from Virginia to York, SC via North Carolina. See Francis Ross' site for additional references.

Continuing, I do see a problematic point about this site's James' father, Francis. This site claims Francis was born in 1694 and with James' birth claimed at 1706, that would make Francis 12 years old when James was born.

Without seeing Brashear's "Descendants of Francis Ross," (the source for this site's information) but assuming it is the same information contained within his "George Ross, Revolutionary War Soldier," my gut says that the birth date of 1698 is probably correct and a death location in York South Carolina... sometime after they completed their migration to York County, which Dr. Moore states, "before the Revolution."

That said, I think there should be a cautionary note on in the biography that there is conflicting information pertaining to his death date and location in the event further information is discovered to substantiate either claim.

Thoughts? Jason

Thanks for your suggestions about the birth and death information for the merge of this profile with Ross-1912. I agree that a 1698 birth year looks reasonable, in Ireland. What about the location of his death?. It's not possible that he died in West Virginia in 1751. West Virginia didn't become a state until 1863. South Carolina looks a lot more realistic. You're right that it's probably a good idea to indicate in the biography the dates/locations not used.

But my statement wasn't very clear. My real concern was about the different birth/death information for the two profiles for his father. One says his father Francis was born and died 1694-1751 and the other 1665-1720. One of them says Francis died in West Virginia, not possible. But the other one says he died in Ireland. From what I can see on these profiles, it looks like Francis immigrated with his children, so must have died in the colonies. South Carolina?

Hi Kay,

Unfortunately, I don't have any definitive information about James' father except for the Brashear information and the Nathaniel Green information (https://www.wikitree.com/photo.php/0/09/Ross-1912.pdf), both secondary sources. Brashear states that Francis (b.1665) went to Ireland and married in 1690 and has 4 children. He leaves any additional information about him blank. Green states that "the clan" started in Scotland, went to Ireland, and then on to America but goes on to state that "Francis Ross was born in Scotland and immigrated to Ireland where he married and lived the remainder of his life." Nothing more is stated about him.

Now... deducing the other information we know. According to Brashear and Green, James immigrated in 1724; which, I would assume his brothers came with him. Regardless, in 1724, Francis (b. 1665) would have been 59-60 years old. Certainly, that is not too old to travel... but... he was also married to an "Irish lady of aristocratic birth.", which to me, means he was doing OK there in Ireland.

If I had to put a "death date"... I would put it before 1735, due to the fact that he would have been living a good lifestyle with little stress... and that puts his age at 70. But... TOTALLY speculative.

With that said, there are 3 Francis Ross (b. 1665) profiles that need to merge. Thus, my intent of merging the James' profiles first and then I was going to move on to the Francis Profiles. The are: (Ross-1913), (Ross-11646), and (Ross-12921). The third one may have fallen below the radar because it is spelled "Frances" and there are some non-standard events that are discussed in the biography. Unfortunately, there aren't any references to the biography save, Charles Brashear's, "Descendants of Lord Frances Ross." Which... lends itself some difficulties because everyone (myself included) references Brashear in their citations. I have not seen either the "Descendants of Lord Frances Ross" nor the "Descendants of Francis Ross b. 1665" works. My gut says these two people are two separate individuals where the profile manager of the third Francis Ross (b. 1665) profile inter-mixed the information... but once again, I haven't seen the cited work to determine if that hunch is valid or not.

Cheers... and thanks for the intellectual challenge!

Another reference to Francis and James. The Ross-Chestnut-Sutton Family of South Carolina, by William B. White, Jr. (2002). He seems to reference Brashear quite a bit, but in his book regarding Francis (b. 1665) he says, "b. Scot 1665, to Ire c.1690, to Amer c1724, d aft 1749, m c1704 to 'an Irish lady of aristocratic birth.'" Regarding James, he has his birth as "c1706" and death in "Frederick Co., VA in 1751." I think this is the reference for this profile instead of the Brashear book. So, the question really is, did James leave VA? White argues "No," while Dr. Moore states, "Yes." If I had to chose, I would lean more on Dr. Moore because he actually knew James "Old Jimmy" and presumably talked to him about his family. Which, is probably the reason he mentions that his "Gentleman Frank's" father migrated to York County (who was also Old Jimmy's father). Which, also puts his death after 1770"ish".

Ross-1912 and Ross-11645 appear to represent the same person because: Hi Paul,

Looking at some of the Wiki-Tree profiles on our line and it looks like we have duplicates of James (Francis' son).

It does look like these are duplicate profiles, but before they can be merged, the difference between their two different fathers needs to be resolved: Ross-11646 and Ross-1913. There are significant differences in birth and death dates on those two. I will propose that merge. If you have information that will help with that merge, please add it. Thanks!
