DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Mary by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Mary:

Ross-217 and Ross-1971 are not ready to be merged because: It is not clear which of three different women of the same name, all from Ipswich, was the wife of Samuel Southwick.

Ross-1971 and Ross-217 appear to represent the same person because: Same person

I appreciate the comment, and hope instead of this sitting forever unattempted, someone will apply their perspicacity to resolve it. Mary Ross-1854 is on Wikitree as Mrs. Fitts, with almost no data. Perhaps that profile can be improved. These two Mary Rosses (1971 and 217) have the same bd in Ipswich. Typically that is a good choice for a merge, since as Kay has stated there were three Mary Rosses within a few years of each other who did not have the same bd. If you can improve either of these two or three or more profiles to distinguish them, you should do so. That would be a service to the community. Thank you.

Carolyn,

Originally Ross-217 had a birthdate of 1658. The only reason she has a birthdate that matches that of Ross-1971 is because in April 2021 you changed that information on her profile. I reviewed the sources from Torrey again for the marriage of Samuel Southwick and Mary Ross. There is no mention of her birth year or her parents. You have provided no evidence that Ross-1971 and Ross-217 actually have the same birth information. I still maintain that there is no evidence for which Mary Ross of Ipswich was the wife of Samuel Southwick.

I agree that it would be nice to clear this up, but I am concerned that without evidence, it is inappropriate to make assumptions about which Mary Ross, out of three different ones in Ipswich, was the actual wife of Samuel Southwick.

Can someone with access to NEHGR vol 157, refer to page 40 and see if there is indeed the approriate data to support this?

Also, anyone with access to Amer. Ancestors, what is at this URL? https://www.americanancestors.org/DB190/i/7724/320/141483951

Thanks so much, Shaun.

The record you added for NEHGR vol 157, page 40, explains clearly that the Mary Ross who married Samuel Southwick in 1686 was the daughter of John Ross and Mary Haggett (because of her mention as Mary Ross alias Southwick in the distribution of her brother Jonathan's estate in 1704).

Thanks also to Carolyn Adams for her persistence! I've approved the merge.

Now we just need the approval of Heather Brown (profile manager for Southwick-1971) to complete the merge.

Ross-1971 and Ross-217 appear to represent the same person because: Same person. I used the marriage record which identifies Mary as of Ipswich, which supports the identification.

I see in Torrey that Samuel Southwick married Mary Ross 24 June 1686 in Ipswich. None of the records supporting Torrey give a birth year for Samuel's wife Mary, and originally she had an estimated birth year of 1658. I don't see any documentation, other than a family tree, that the Mary Ross from Ipswich who married Samuel Southwick was the daughter of John Ross and Mary Haggett. In fact there was another Mary Ross in Ipswich at that time, who married Abraham Fitts in 1693 (as his second wife). Her profile is Mary Ross.

The Ipswich birth records for that time period show three girls named Mary Ross:, d. of Kilicres, born 31 March 1664, d. of John born 16 April 1666, and d. of Fenell born 23 December 1668.

How have you determined that Ross-1971 is the same person as Ross-217? Isn't it just as likely that Ross-1971 married Abraham Fitts, not Samuel Southwick? Or that Mary Ross-1971 didn't marry either Abraham Fitts or Samuel Southwick.

I've changed this pending merge to an Unmerged Match and think we should leave it there until these questions are resolved.
