Biography

7 Jan 2023: Update in Progress

Elizabeth Ross was born in 1780 to David (1.10)*and Susannah (Suddreth) Ross, in Surry County, North Carolina. When Elizabeth was about 5 years old, in 1785 her parents moved their family to Greenville County, South Carolina, settling in the southern section of the county on Horse Creek.[1] In 1795, Robert Ross (Father of her future husband, William Ross), purchased a tract of land adjacent to her father's land.[2] It is this purchase that prompted the meeting between William and Elizabeth, which would lead to their marriage in about 1797.[3] Additionally in 1797, her father initiated his family's move to Logan County, KY, close to current-day Adairville, by first migrating there himself; inwhich, his family followed shortly thereafter.[1] No doubt her parents' intended move to Kentucky necessitated the timing of William and Elizabeth's marriage. The year 1797 also saw Elizabeth's cousin, John (1.7.2)*, who was living in Greenville County, SC also, remove to Christian County, SC.

A year later, in May 1798, Elizabeth gave birth to twins, Margaret and Mary Ross.[4][5] While William was learning the trade of surveying and also land prospecting, Elizabeth was busy raising their children; nevertheless, she remained an active participant in the land transactions by signing her Dower's Consent for each property sold.[6] In 1800, their family is captured in the Census living in Greenville County, SC.[7]

and died in 1864 She was buried in Robberson Prairie Cemetery, Ebenezer, Greene County, Missouri [8]

After William’s death, Elizabeth lived with many of her different children. In 1850, she lived with her son, Perry[9], and in 1852 applied for a War of 1812 Land Bounty in which 40 Acres of land in Morgan County was awarded to her based on William’s service in the Kentucky militia[10]. This plot of land is close to where the Shelby Ross Cemetery is currently located and her son Perry, and some of his descendants, are buried. By 1856, at the settlement of William’s estate, Elizabeth was living with their daughter Jane in Johnson County[11]. However, by 1860 she was living with her son, David, which is where she would live for the remainder of her life[12]. Elizabeth passed away in 1864 and is buried adjacent to her son David in the Robberson Prairie Baptist Church Cemetery, Ebenezer Greene County, Missouri[13].

Research Notes:

Parental Connection

24 Sep 2022: Elizabeth's parental connection to David and Susanah (Suddreth) Ross is Circumstantial. Evidence points to them being Elizabeth's parents, to wit:

Argument For this connection:

  • We know from Perry Ross' biography that Elizabeth's maiden name was "Ross."
  • We know that as of 10 Nov 1805, David and Susannah Ross had seven living daughters, whereas 6 were named. Of which Elizabeth COULD be the un-named living daughter.
  • Further, as of 10 Nov 1805, David Ross states that 3 of his sons and 3 of his daughters were married, which those we know of are below. The omission of 2 daughters who are married leaves room for Elizabeth to be one of those daughters:
    • Benjamin Ross (Son) married Mary "Polly" Ross circa 1795
    • Jesse Ross (Son) married Mary Morris circa 1799
    • Peter Ross (Son) married Temperance Arnold on 15 Aug 1804
    • Margaret Ross (Daughter) married Samuel Wooldridge circa 1797
  • We know, Elizabeth was born in 1780, of which, David and Susannah Ross do not have any documented children born between 1778 and 1784, leaving the possibility that their un-named daughter, could easily be born between those years.
  • We know, Elizabeth's purported father, David Ross, was listed in the 1790 Census in Greenville County, South Carolina. In that event, he is listed as having 6 Free White Females residing in his household, to wit: Susannah (his wife), Margaret (b. ~1778), Lucy (b. unk), Nancy (b. unk), and Sarah (b. unk). Leaving the 6th and final female as Elizabeth.
  • We know, Elizabeth's husband, William, was granted 500 acres of land on Horse Creek, Greenville County, SC in 1799 near where David Ross' land was located.
  • We know, Elizabeth's husband, William, bought and sold land, originally granted to William T. Rodgers on Horse Creek, Greenville County, SC, that borders on land originally granted to David Ross.
  • We know, in 1806, William and Elizabeth Ross migrate to Hopkinsville, Christian County, KY, which is about 50 miles from where David Ross, her purported father lived.
  • We know, in 1819 in Cooper County, MO, Elizabeth's husband, William, witnessed a note on Elizabeth's purported cousin, Churchill B. Ross.[14]
  • We know, in 1820 in Cooper County, MO, Elizabeth's purported brother, Claiborne Ross, was married to Hannah Forbes.
  • We know, in 1823, Elizabeth's husband, William, was named as a Security on the estate on Elizabeth's purported cousin, Churchill B. Ross' estate.[15]
  • We know, in 1823, Elizabeth's purported cousin, William Ross, was a Security on the estate of Stephen Cole, where Elizabeth's husband, William Ross was named the Administrator.[16]
  • We know, in 1831, Elizabeth's purported brothers, Garland and William Ross, moved to Pilot Grove, Cedar Township, MO, where William and Elizabeth are documented living in Cedar Township.
  • We know, in regards to naming patterns, William and Elizabeth had a daughter named Susannah (after Elizabeth's purported mother) and a son named David (after Elizabeth's purported father).
  • We know in regards to DNA matches, as of 6 Oct 2022, that descendants of William Ross, Elizabeth's husband, and David Ross, Elizabeth's purported father, are NOT related via Y-DNA, the male "Ross" line. However, there are three individuals that match both the William Ross and David Ross lines via Autosomal connections, to wit: Bob Waltrep, Justin Sambaugh, and Larry Rosser. Because there is no connection via the Y-Chromosome, it can be assumed that the autosomal connections are through the X-Chromosome, which infers a relationship between Elizabeth and David.

Argument against this connection:

  • Information about Elizabeth's birth place is consistently listed as South Carolina; whereas, in 1780 when Elizabeth was born, David and Susannah Ross lived in Surry County, NC. They did not arrive in South Carolina until 1785.
  • Perry Ross' biography states the the "maternal grandparents," namely David Ross, came from Ireland.
