Biography

1727 Birth and Parents

Anne Arnold Ross was born 9 October 1727, the daughter of John Ross and Alicia (Arnold) Ross.[1]

She was the daughter of John Ross, "who came to this country in 1730." [2]

1752 Marriage

Anne was married on 12 December 1752 in Frederick County, Maryland to Francis Key. Francis was the son of Philip Key "one of two brothers who first settled in St. Mary's County." [2]

Blind

"At the burning of her father's home at Carpenter's Point, her sight was destroyed by fire and smoke whilst rescuing two servants from the flames. She then crossed the boy and resided with her daughter, Elizabeth Ross Key, at "Bell Voir" where the old tombstone marks her resting place. [2]

1811 Death

She died in 1811 at age 84 and is buried about seven miles from Annapolis on the "Belvoir" Plantation. Her grave marker reads as follows:

Mrs. Ann Arnold Key Died Jan.5th 1811 Agd 84 years[3]

Her tombstone reads, "In memory of Mrs. Ann Arnold key, who departed this life January 5th, 1811, in the 84th year of her age. [2]

Children

  1. John Ross Key born 19 September 1754
  2. Philip Barton Key born 12 April 1757
  3. Elizabeth Ross Key born 10 August 1759 [page 23]. This daughter married Col. Henry Manadier. [2]

Upon the death of their father the will which had been made could not be found and consequently the property under the old promogeniture laws, existing at that date, descended to the eldest son, John Ross Key, who with generosity not usual in our day waived his legal rights and shared the property with his brother.
