Biography

Elizabeth Ross is said to have been the only child of Robert Ross (killed at the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh, Master of Ross, eldest son of Ninian Ross, third Lord Ross (of Halkhead).[1] Her mother is not mentioned by Balfour Paul.

She married, 10 May 1562 with contract 22 February 1562, John Fleming, 5th Lord Fleming. William Hunter states the date of marriage as 17 May 1564.[2] The marriage, instead of being celebrated at the Castle of Biggar or Cumbernauld, took place in presence of Queen Mary and her court at Holyrood.

They had a number of children. Her husband fought on the side of Queen Mary during the Civil War and was at Dumbarton Castle. She was captured there when the castle fell in 1571 although was treated well. Her children, young at the time, were allowed to leave with her and they resided at Boghall castle at Biggar.

John Fleming died at Edinburgh in 1572 and she didn't survive him long. She made her testament 14 April 1578.[3] In her will she appointed her son John, her brother-in-law, John, Earl of Athole, and Thomas Scott of Abbotshall, her executors. It was in virtue of this arrangement that John Fleming, styled "Captain of Biggar," on the 25th and 26th October 1578, delivered an inventory of the "siluer wark and garments, and vyer thingis" that pertained to the deceased lady, to John, Earl of Athole.

It was not long after her death that the family would be restored to their titles.
