William Ross, Jr., son of William Ross and Hannah Hungerford, was born about 1686 [1] or 1688 [2] in Westerly, Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. [3][4]
William wed Anna Lewis on 18 April 1711 in Westerly. They were married by John Saunders, Justice. [5][6] William and Anna had at least the following children:
Jemima (Ross) Coon, born 1711;
William Ross, b. 1715;
Thomas Ross, b. 1719;
Isaac Ross, b. 1722;
Ann Ross, b. 1726;
Hannah Ross, b. 1727;
Peleg Ross, b. 1733.
William was elected by the General Assembly to the rank of Ensign in the Kings county militia, from May 1728-May 1733. The following were the units he was elected to:[7]
May 1728, 2nd Regiment Militia of the Main Land, 2nd Westerly Company. Officers: Lt. Stephen Wilcox, Ens. William Ross.
May 1729, no list for this year.
May 1730, 2nd Regiment Militia of the Main Land, 1st Westerly Company. Officers: Capt. Isaac Thompson, Lt. Stephen Wilcox, Ens. Wm. Ross.
May 1731, 3rd Regiment Kings County Militia, 1st Westerly Company. Officers: Capt. Isaac Thompson, Lt. Stephen Wilcox, Ens. William Ross.
May 1732, 3rd Regiment Kings County Militia, 1st Westerly Company. Officers: Capt. Isaac Thompson, Lt. Dan’l Stanton, Ens. Wm Ross.
May 1733, 3rd Regiment Kings County Militia, 1st Westerly Company. Officers: Capt. Stephen Wilcox, Lt. Daniel Stanton, Ens. William Ross.
William signed the 1738 petition to divide Westerly, Rhode Island and create Charlestown. [8]
In 1747 William Ross was living in Westerly, Kings county, Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. [9]
William's wife Anna died on 29 February 1748 in Westerly. William died in or about 1767: his Will dated 1767 mentions their son Peleg Ross as executor. [10]
Geopolitical-Historical Note
Kings County was created from Providence Plantations in 1729. It was renamed Washington County on 29 October 1781 in honour of General and President Washington.
