Biography

Monona Leader January 29, 1903

Abbie Ross-Slitor

Following an illness covering two years of close confinement on Tuesday evening, Mrs. Abbie Ross Slitor passed peacefully into that sleep that knows no wakening. Her death has long ben expected. The nature of her ailments, the slow, but sure ravages of a combination of diseases gave very little hope to her companion and friends. It was waiting for the summons that in spite of all medical skill was sure to come.

Abbie Ross was born in Franklin, Franklin County, Vermont, March 14, 1846. Her age was therefore 56 years, 10 months and 11 days. With her parents, she came to Monona, Iowa in September 1855. In the fall of 1868, the family moved to Omro, Wis. December 26, 1870 at Oshkosh, Wis. she was united in marriage to Edward F. Slitor of Monona, by whom she is survived, with three brothers, Orrin A Ross of Bullion, Nev., E. A. Ross of Park Falls, Wis. Hiram A. Ross of Beloit, Kansas and a sister Lucy Ann Carty of Berthoud, Colorado.

Mr. and Mrs. Slitor lived in Monona until 1874 when they moved to Kansas where they remained until 1890 when they removed to Missouri, where they remained until 1891when they returned to Monona which has since been their home.

Previous to her marriage, Mrs. Slitor taught school at Osage, Rossville and in other districts in Allamakee County. She united with the M. E. Church in 1869, and was a consisten and earnest Christian woman. With the organization of the Woman's Relief Corps she became its first president and her labor influence and labor was lent to build up and establish that organization. At the institution of the Eastern Star, she was chosen its first Worthy Matron, and in society she was an earnest sister in the fold, taking a keen interest in the organization and lending her influence to its well being.

To write of Mrs. Abbie Slitor is to write of a good woman, a lady fitted with teh noblest characteristics of womanhood; a character, intellegent and commanding; a life with a silvery lining, with te ratest of gems glittering in the sunlight of a happy home and within the circle of her friendship and companionship. A christian from principle, her life was characterized by a happy disposition, yet exacting in the fullfillment of every duty. What more need be said. We all knew her, respecting and admiring the lovable character of earnest womanhood she so aptly protrayed.

During all her sickness, she was patient and uncomplaining, resigned to the will of the God in whom she had explicit faith.

The sorrowing husband and relatives have the sypathy and condolences of this community. Their grief will only be lessened as consolation if sought in Him who has taken her into the realms of the Heavenly home.

The funeral takes place at the house at 2 o'clock this afternoon at teh M.E. church conducted by the Rev. Brown. The W.R.C. will officiate at the residence, and the Eastern Star at the grave.
