Biography

John was born in 1843. ^{[1] [2]}

In 1866, he married Elizabeth McDonald. "Married. On the 13th inst., at the Manse, by the Rev. T. Duncan, Mr. John Ross, Lot 59, to Miss Elizabeth McDonald, Lot 50." ^[3] They had one daughter.

After Elizabeth's death, he married Jessie Nicholson in 1870. ^[4]

John, age 36, and Jessie were in Lot 38, Queens County, Prince Edward Island in 1881. John was a farmer. Living at home were Elizabeth, age 15; Elisabeth Margaret, age 9; John S., age 7; Jessie Ann, 5; John Alexander, age 3 and Donald Ross, age 1. ^[5]

Ten years later, children at home were Elizabeth, 18; John S., 17; Jessie, 15; John A., 13; Donald, 11; and Mary, age 5. John, age 47, said both of his parents were born in Scotland. ^[6]

With the passing away of Mr John Ross of Surrey on Thursday January 26 Belfast and the neighborhood is the poorer of one of its most prominent and best loved citizens.

It was the earthly end of a long and useful career he having reached his 90th year, the last seventy of which he spent on his farm home at Surry, where also dwells his son, John A. Ross and his family. The late John Ross was born in Valleyfield in 1843 and while still a young man came to Surrey where he soon married his first wife Elizabeth McDonald of Uigg, of which marriage there is one child, Mrs A McArthur, Pittsburgh, Mass [Mary Elizabeth, Mrs Alvah McArthur, Pittsfield, Mass]. Some years after the death of his first wife Mr Ross married Miss Jessie Nicholson, Belle River, who predeceased him in 19?4. Of this union there are 5 children, Mrs Elizabeth Prior and Miss Mary Ross, both of Boston, Mass; Mrs Angus McKenzie, Pinette; John S, Pittsfield, Mass; Daniel in Alaska and the above mentioned John A. ^[7]

Note that John re-used some names, daughters Mary Elizabeth, and Mary, and Elizabeth and sons John A. and John S.

Only two marriages were mentioned in his obit.

John is in census records on PEI with second wife Jessie, at the same time he is supposed to have also been married to Bertha White - have removed the third marriage listed here, it must be a different John Ross. (found right John Ross for Bertha White)

The John Ross, son of John and Rachel was born 1 November 1843 (transcribed baptismal record), and on the 1901 census, the John married to Jessie said his date of birth was 11 November 1843, a fairly good match.

Daughters of John Ross and Bertha White said their father was born in England, and his son Charles said his father was born in Maine.
