John was born about 1765 in Scotland.[1] John Ross was an innkeeper in Cromarty at the time of his first wife Katherine Watson's death, as his profession is inscribed on the stone he dedicated to her.[2]
He had three children with his first wife, two daughters who died as infants, and one son David, who was born the year his mother died. There are no birth records for any of them. The existence of the daughters is confirmed by the information on his wife's gravestone about daughter Mary[3] and a nearby one for Margaret.[4] His son David only appears in Canadian census records and his birthdate and death date are on his gravestone there.
John Ross married Anne Mustard less than six months [5]after his first wife died and Anne became the stepmother of his baby son David.[6] John and Anne had 5 children of their own in Cromarty.
John Ross probably passed away before 1841 as he does not appear in the census of Cromarty with his wife Ann Ross.[7]

↑ Several online family trees at Ancestry.com have him dying in 1833 in Aberdeen, Scotland but the date is not credible as no source is cited in any of them. In fact no other information about John is given in these trees, apart from him being the father of Anne Mustard's children. John Ross is probably the most common name in Ross and Cromarty during this period. There is no visible gravestone for him in Cromarty

Ross-629 and Ross-8932 do not represent the same person because: PLease read the profile on Ross-8932. He was born in Scotland so he can't possibly match Ross-629. His wives don't match either. They are clearly different people. Ross-8932 never lived in the USA.
