Born 25 Apr 1813 to George Ogilvie (or Oglevie) Ross and Dorothea Catharina Steijn (or Steyn) - possibly at sea while moving from South Africa to England
George and Dorothea had evidently just arrived in England from Cape Town, South Africa, as four of James Regent Ross's siblings had been born there, as follows: Jeane Dorothea Ross [Ross-17880] born 7 Nov 1807 Helena Johanna Ross [Ross-17882] born 8 May 1809 Henry Ross [Ross-13419] born 18 Aug 1810 George Ross - born and baptised in South Africa, but unfortunately with no year
All four of these siblings were baptised in Cape Town Dutch Reformed Church
James Regent Ross was christened on 24 Jul 1813 in City Road Wesleyan Chapel, Finsbury, London
In the record found in England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975 the mother's name is given as "Dorathy" [sic], but in the South African archives she is always referred to as Dorothea Catharina Steijn or alternatively Steyn
Married Eliza Simson Boys on 18 Nov 1837 in Dover, Kent (St Mary the Virgin) Father specified as George Oglevie [sic] Ross and Eliza's father as Thomas Tanner
Interestingly, another of Thomas Tanner's daughters (Maria) married Henry, the elder brother of James Regent
England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975 also holds records of the Christening of the following off-spring: a. Daughter Jane Ogilvie Ross (note the use of Jane's grandfather's middle name) on 9 May 1841 having been born on 5 Apr 1841 at Kennington, Surrey (St Mark's) b. Daughter Catherina (note the use of Catherina's grandmother's middle name) Fearn Ross, born 6 Sep 1839 at Sydenham, Kent. Mother was Eliza Simpson [sic] Ross c. Son James Regent Ross (same name as his father), born 15 Jul 1844 and Christened on 18 Aug 1844 at Dulwich College, London. This record spells the mother's name as Eliza Samson [sic]. There is a separate record for a baptism on the same date in Southwark, Surrey, where the mother's name is spelt "Simson"
There is a record in England, Surrey Parish Registers, 1536-1992 documenting a burial of James Regent Ross on 1 Jan 1883 in Lambeth, Surrey, aged 69
James may have remarried on 25 Oct 1874 at St Thomas's church, Marylebone, London - to Frances Eliza Tribe, but this probably is the marriage of the son James Regent Ross.
In a series of Electoral Registers dating from 1890 to 1906, a James Regent Ross is documented within the Portman Square Ward, living at 9 North Street in the borough of Marylebone and at is living at 9 Aybrook Street in the 1910 Register. This is again presumably the son, not the father
