Son of David Ross & Rosilla Elliott. Enlisted 10 Apr 1862 at age 18 in Co C, 17th IA INF as a PVT & died of measles & pneumonia 29 Apr 1862 in Keokuk, IA. Military records say he is buried in the Keokuk NTL Cem. at Keokuk, IA, Plot 38 (memorial 2882920) where he has a military stone. Iowa Cemetery records list his name at Dallas Cemetery and he has a stone here also. He is buried in Keokuk Cemetery and has a memorial stone here that sits between his parents, David Ross & Rosilla Ross Wilson.

Keokuk was deployment point for thousands of Iowa soldiers being shipped south on the Mississippi River. It also housed military hospitals for the sick and wounded. It was rampant with disease to which many of these men had never been exposed such as measles, scarlet fever, diphtheria, typhoid and other forms of dysentery
