Biography

Jean Rouleau was born in 1796 in Quebec Canadian Territory, son of Joseph Amable Rouleau (1774–1808) and Reine Lasante Bilodeau (1782–1871).[1]

In the 1851 census Rouleau (age 54) was in Quebec City, Quebec, Quebec, Canada.[2]

He married Camille Bilodeau (a possible relation of his mother's) on 23 Feb 1852 in Notre-Dame de Lévis, Bas-Canada.[1]

Hubert married about 1855 (based on age of oldest child) White Buffalo (born in Porcupine, South Dakota; daughter of Leg (Red Cloud) High). She died about 1858. Their children (who Hubert took to a Kansas school and never saw again) were:[3]

  1. Susan Nancy Rouleau (1856–1940); married William Sears, “a reputable mechanic of good social standing” while at Highland University Preparatory School (Hafen, 348). William and Susan returned to Pine Ridge Reservation and Susan was allotted land. They had seventeen children.
  2. John Rouleau (1857– ); never returned to South Dakota
  3. Jesse James Rouleau (1858–1930); tried unsuccessfully for years to be granted land on the Pine Ridge Reservation.

He married Eagle Woman by whom he had:[3]

  • Yellow Robe; raised on the Rosebud Reservation
  • Nickolas; sent to Pennsylvania as a young boy, to attend Carlisie Federal Industrial School. He returned to Pine Ridge Reservation and married Leta Livermont in 1896
  • Louisa Rouleau was born on 18 Aug 1871 in Todd, South Dakota, United States.[4]; she married Charles Twiss.

Hurbert died on 22 Jun 1887 in Valentine, Cherry, Nebraska, United States, aged 90. Hubert was mentioned on a memorial in Minnechaduza Cemetery, Valentine, Cherry County, Nebraska, United States with a death date of 22 Jun 1887.[5]

Research Notes

This person is given three marriages on FamilySearch (and not the same three as described above) and each marriage has three children. There are very few actual sources, so please proceed with caution. I've added what I could, but even the marriage with Shell Woman (abt.1826-) who appears to be Cheyenne is problematic in my opinon - she and her daughter (Jessue Joshua Cheasaway) are claimed to be Cheyenne, but the 1900 census she is recorded on the Pine Ridge reservation which is Ogalala Sioux Tribe. There is also no marriage record, so please treat with a hefty dose of skepticism. -Mullenberg-4 01:30, 4 February 2024 (UTC)

Update: The Native Americans project has determined there is insufficient evidence to support this marriage (or children by it) and has detached the spouse and offspring. Smith-32867 17:23, 5 February 2024 (UTC)

His purported daughter (by Shell Woman; disputed) Sallie Harris (no WikiTree profile as of Feb 2024) died on 23 Feb 1932 in Rosebud, Montana, United States.[6]

While her death record identifies her father as "? Roulleau" of French-Canada, it names her mother as Ball Woman, not Shell Woman.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Hubert by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Hubert:

There appears to be an even earlier (1850) marriage to Camille Bilodeau-- at least between Hubert Rouleau (son of Joseph Rouleau and Marie Reine Bilodeau (a relative of the bride?) -- parents who are also attached here.

I'm worried about that marriage record, though; it calls Hubert a journdlier -- day laborer. This Hubert was a fur trapper. Were there two men by the same name? If not, he had an earlier, French-Canadian (white) wife who is not named in the 1989 biographical sketch.
