John was 46 years old in 1620 when he was listed in the Visitation of The County of Devon, giving him a birth date of about 1574.[1] He was baptized 10 Feb 1573/4 in Lamerton, Devon, England.[2] He married Elizabeth, daughter of Robert Moore of Devon, Esq., probably about 1599, based on the estimated birth date of their oldest child.
John and Elizabeth's children were sons Francis, Robert, John, Nicholas, and Joseph; and daughters Elizabeth, Agnes, Gertrude, Mary and Thomasine.[3]
They lived in "Great Haye", the Rowe Manor house, northeast of Lamerton, Devon. The stone lintel of the original house shows the coats of arms of Rowe and Moore.[4] The house, now extensively modified, is registered.[5]
John died in 1652, and was buried on 22 June 1652, Lamerton, Devon, England. He was referred to as "Gent" in the burial record.[6] His will, signed 10 January 1652/3, was entered into probate in August 1653.[7] In his will, he names his wife Elizabeth, his sons John and Nicholas, his grandson John son of Nicholas, his daughters Elizabeth and Thomasina, and his sisters Elizabeth and Martha.[8]
