Biography

Flag of Virginia
Thomas Rowe was a Virginia colonist.

Thomas Rowe was probably born in Virginia. He married Mary Walters. They had at least one daughter: Elizabeth Rowe.[citation needed]

Mary and Thomas married in 1683 in Virginia.[1]

Elizabeth "daughter of Thomas and Mary Roe, was baptized 15 February 1684/5, Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia."[2]

Research Notes

This Thomas Rowe, his wife Mary Walters, and daughter Elizabeth are Virginians.

A FindAGrave memorial shows an Isaac Thomas Rowe born 1660 in Greensville, Virginia, attached to memorials for Mary Walters (wife) and Elizabeth (daughter) but died in Massachusetts.[3][1] It seems that FindAGrave memorial perhaps adopted the name and death information of the Massachusetts Rowe.

The Massachusetts Thomas (possibly "Isaac Thomas") is sometimes said to be born 1660 in Great Budworth, Cheshire, England and died 30 August 1737 in Gloucester, Essex, Massachusetts. Ancestry and FindAGrave appear to merge the two (Massachusetts & Virginia Thomases).[3] See this profile for John Rowe of Massachusetts (b 1714) and his son John, born 1737. Both are DAR Patriot Ancestors whose service was in Massachusetts. There's also a record for an Isaac Rowe born 1762 in Gloucester, Massachusetts.[4]

WikiTree's profile for the Gloucester, Massachusetts Thomas Rowe is Isaac Thomas Rowe.

Location Notes

Greensville County: Thomas's birth location is not known (see next section on possible parents). The FindAGrave birth location of Greensville County[3] is not appropriate since it both unsourced and not possible - Greensville County was not established until 1781 (see the Greensville County category page).
Middlesex County: Although the birth location of Thomas Rowe is not known, daughter Elizabeth was baptized in Middlesex County, Virginia.[2]

Disputed Parents

There is no evidence, and no reason to believe, that Thomas Rowe was the son of Sir Thomas Rowe and Ann Langston. It would seem that this couple was too old to have been the parents of Thomas. A more likely father of Thomas is asserted here, but without any supporting documentation.[5]
"here" (in preceding paragraph) is Geni entry for
  • Thomas Roe, also known as "Rous"
  • born "1630 (82)", England
  • died "May 01, 1712 (82)", Maryland City, Anne Arundel, Maryland
  • Husband of Frances Richardson, born 1643, Norfolk, Virginia, daughter of John and Frances (Lane) Richardson[6]
  • Children:
    • William Roe
    • Mary Rowe
    • John Roe
    • Thomas Roe
    • Frances Lane Roe

The WikiTree profile for Frances Richardson's husband Thomas Roe shows his birth as 1639 in Lowdham, Nottinghamshire, England. A search of freereg.org on 8 November 2018 revealed one entry for a Thomas Roe in Lowdham:[7]

  • Thomas Roe of Epperstone married Elizabeth Fisher of Gunthrope on 14 November 1603 at St Mary the Virgin.[8]
Of interest: the profile attached as father of Thomas Roe-1225 (husband of Frances Richardson) is Thomas Rous, born 1604, Lowdham, Nottinghamshire, England. His profile is attached as husband to Hare-787 for Margarett Anne Hare, born 1615, "Bruisyard Hall, Suffolk, England" -
  • Nothing found on her in search of freereg.org for Hares baptized 1600-1625 in Suffolk). ~ Noland-165 15:10, 8 November 2018 (UTC)
  • Found a baptism record for a Thomas Rose, son of Munger Rose (no information on mother). Thomas was baptized on 5 January 1596/7 at St Mary the Virgin, Southwell, Nottinghamshire.[9] ~ Noland-165 15:19, 8 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi Stephanie, I have been trawling through some of the books that I have, there is a Thomas Roe, aged 22, who left the Port of London on 2 May 1635 on the 'Alexander' for Barbados. This may be too early for this particular Thomas. In Cavaliers and Pioneers, pages 352 and 402, there are two entries for a Thomas Rowe, 15 Jul 1657 Thomas was awarded 500 acres upon the Potomack for the transport of 10 people. On 10 Jul 1661 Northumberland County, land that had been assigned to Thomas Rowe by John Hany, was reassigned to Symon Richardson. In the History and Genealogy of King and Queen County, by Rev. Alfred Bagby, page 107, the Rowe family are listed as early settlers, he states that 'Chelsea', 'Melrose' and Rural 'Felicity' were old colonial homes of the Rowe family in King and Queen County.

Same here could only find her baptism entry, some of the trees on ancestry have Thomas Rowe from all over the UK, one uses a marriage to Mary 1686 New England Marriages - Boston/Dover, NH and Thomas being born in Muswell Hill, Middlesex.

update: that page has Rowe spelling (I had originally spelled it Roe in this note).

interesting that the online tree I've been looking at shows daughters of Thomas Rowe/Frances ____ /sisters of Thomas Rowe b 1657 as Mary Walters Rowe (b 1663) & Frances Lane Rowe (b 1665).*

see this page, for Thomas Rowe b 1630 (husband of Frances ___)

* Middle names at this time were unusual. I'm wondering if Walters & Lane were their husbands' surnames & got muddled somehow. I vaguely recall seeing a Rowe/Lane marriage somewhere in my Harris research.

yup. info is pretty sketchy for parents of Elizabeth Rowe. About all I've found is her batism entry that shows her parents as Thomas and Mary Roe. No guarantee she's the Elizabeth that married George Walton either, although dates work and descendants use Row as given name.

ps - the source page for the page just mentioned - Sources - is mostly ged/ftw files with a couple LDS references (no AFN that I noted). A couple of sources listed (albeit not footnoted for Frances's family) might be worth pursuing:
Melba R. Weldon, Rowe and Related Families, pp 14, 15, 19, 94, 99, 111 (many more pages for footnotes 600-4711; I quit reviewing at 600).
Judge Folks Huxford, Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia, Vol 5.
Daniel Nathan Crumpton, Cemeteries & Genealogy- Warren County, Georgia and Immediate Vicinity, 25. (this was footnote 515; Frances's footnotes were 517-529; her children's 530-554)

There were a lot of Wroe family in Westmoreland in the 1600's, I have had a quick look for the name Walton in early patents and the only one I can find is a John Walton who patented 500 acres 3 Sep 1651, Westmoreland, he also sold land in 1661 to Patrick Spence. I can't see a source for the marriage in 1683 or that her maiden name was Walters.

update - actions proposed not taken - see next comment. Relationships probably need to be re-researched.

This page about Frances says she married Thomas Rowe in Norfolk, Virginia in 1654 (and shows son Thomas as born in Norfolk in 1657).

If no objection, I'll change the birth year from 1645 to 1657 & attach the profiles for Frances Richardson & Thomas Roe as parents, even though support is a bit slim.

note: I was going to add Thomas & Frances (Richardson) Roe as his parents, but when I went to add Frances, I received the following automated message:
Warning: Check the data.

Sources are needed for their birth years. I had changed Thomas's from 1660 (which is apparently the date for the Massachusetts Thomas) to 1645, which had been in one of the merged profiles.

That he was born in Virginia is a fair assumption, although it may be wrong. That he was born in Greensville is impossible - records may be in Greensville, but that county did not exist in 1660 (as noted in profile).
