James Elgin Rowe was born on 27 Jul 1852 in Brocksville, Ontario, Canada to James Rowe and Thirza (McNish) Rowe.

According to the 1910 US census, James moved to the United States in about 1866.

In 1875 James E Row (age 25, Telegraph Operator) lived in Watertown, Jefferson, New York with his brother-in-law Peter W Near (37, Book Keeper), sister Lucy Near (36), and three Near nieces & nephews: *inoa (10), William W (8), and Percy (3).^[1]

James married Sarah Elizabeth Berney (went by Elizabeth) on 21 Jun 1881 in Niagara Falls, New York.

James and Elizabeth had three children:

1. Helen Violet (Rowe) Stanway (1882-1938)
2. James Gordon Rowe (1884-1948)
3. Berney Elgin Rowe (1886-1933)

• Helen and James were born in Toronto, Ontario and Berney was born in Malden, Massachusetts. According to the 1900 census the family arrived in the US in 1889, so either this date is incorrect or they moved back and forth more than once.

In 1900 James E Rowe (age 48, Manager Varnish Works) lived at 101 Smith Ave in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan with his wife Elizabeth (43) and three children: Helen (18, At School), Gorden (16, At School), and Berney (15, At School) - James & Elizabeth had been married 19 years; Elizabeth was the mother of 3 children, all living; James, Elizabeth, Helen, & Gorden had arrived in the US in 1889, while Berney was born there.^[2]

In 1910 James E Rowe (age 55, Mge Varnish Co) lived at 1335 West 112th Street in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio with his wife Elizabeth (50) and son Berney (24, Commercial Traveler) - James & Elizabeth had been married 28 years; Elizabeth was the mother of 3 children, all living; James had arrived in the US in 1866, and Elizabeth in 1876..^[3]

James Elgin Rowe passed away on 14 Feb 1918 in Cleveland - his address was 1280 W 112 St; his occupation was Superintendant; he was 66 years old, born 27 Jul 1852 in Brocksville, Canada; his father was James Rowe, born Canada; his mother was Mrs Mc Nishe, born Canada; cause of death was Lotar Pneumonia; the informant was Mrs Elizabeth Rowe on 1280 W 112 St.^[4]

James E Rowe, who died 14 Feb 1918, was buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Toronto on 19 Apr 1918.^[5]
