David Rowe was born in about 1811 in Virginia (in the 1850 U.S. census he lists his place of birth as Virginia)[1] He was the son of James Rowe Jr and Sophia Huffman. They were married in Botetourt County, Virginia in 1799[2] and this is likley where they resided when David was born. In the early 1800s James Rowe Jr and his family, as well as several of his siblings and their families all moved west across the mountians to eastern Kentucky, settling in Pike County and later Morgan County.

On April 24, 1835 in Morgan County, Kentucky David Rowe was married to Cynthia Adkins Belcher, officiated by William H. Kendall[3][4] In the 1840,[5] 1850[6] and 1860[7] U.S. censuses David and his family are listed as residing in Morgan County, Kentucky. By 1880 he is listed in Elliott County, Kentucky in the settlement of Newfoundland or "Crackersneck". He is 71 and his wife "Cyntha" is 75.[8] This probably did not entail a physical move, as Elliott County was newly formed in 1869 from land given by Carter, Lawrence, and Morgan counties.[9] The couple had six children together, three sons and three daughters :
David and his wife both passed away some time after 1880 in Elliott County, Kentucky, as they no longer appear in any documents after this point. His place of burial is currently unknown, but likely to be in the vicinity of the familys old homestead in the Newfoundland area.[10]
Tests results at FTDNA and 23&ME by multiple male line descendants of David Rowe, as well as several male line descendants from the lines of other sons of his grandfather James Rowe Sr, have determined that David Rowes YDNA haplogroup was R-A195. This is part of a YDNA haplogroup known as "Irish Type 2" (haplogroup CTS4466),[11] a lineage strongly associated with southern Ireland and the Uí Fidgenti in particular. (FTDNA Uí Fidhgeinte project). Research on this field of inquiry about the origins of the Rowe/Roe family is currently being coordinated at the FTDNA Rowe Surname Project.
