George was christened on 4th February 1844 at Peterborough, Northamptonshire, England, the second son of Francis Rowell and his wife Frances (Rycraft).[1] In 1861 he was living with his widowed mother and two brothers in Whitsed Street, Peterborough, (wrongly transcribed by LDS as Southampton), a labourer aged 17.[2] In 1867 he married Ann Sharman at Peterborough.[3] In 1871 he, a railway labourer, and Ann had two sons and were living in Peterborough, but by 1881 they had moved to Yaxley, Huntingdonshire (Ann's birthplace), and they had three sons and three daughters with them.[4] One more son was born the following year.
I have not been able to find the official registration record of George's death. However, I have found a notice of death in the Lincoln, Stamford and Rutland Mercury, published 5th October 1883, stating that George Rowell died at Peterborough on 27th September aged 39.[5]
The seven children of George and Ann were:
George William 1868 - 1911
Francis 1869 - 1941
John Thomas 1872 - 1950
Frances (Rusdale) 1874 - 1948
Caroline (Rusdale) 1877 - 1941
Harriet (Wiles) 1880 - 1963
Alfred James 1882 - ?
(Daughters Frances and Caroline married brothers William and Joseph Rusdale.)
