Biography

Keturah Rowell was born about 1813 in South Carolina.[1][2] She is said to be of of Irish descent in a 3 Dec 1839 letter from her alleged brother-in-law to his family in New York.[3] Her parents may have been Valentine Rowell and Eda (Kolb) Rowell[4]

Keturah and A. B. Campbell were married on 29 Nov 1835 in Darlington District, South Carolina. When the couple wrote to his family in New York in Sep 1838 to tell them of the marriage, they also proudly announced the birth of their first daughter, Eda Henrietta Campbell, reported to be "twelve months old the first day of this month." They were living in Darlington where her husband taught school and farmed. The letter was sent from Society Hill which is in Darlington County, South Carolina.[3]

Sometime after their daughter Eleanor Idella was born in jul 1846 in South Carolina[5] and before their son Francis Marion was born in Nov 1847 in Georgia,[6] the couple decided to relocate. They were settled in Madison County, Florida, in time to be enumerated on the 1850 Census.[1]A. B. Campbell and family continued to live in Madison County, Florida, through at least 1867 when they were enumerated on the Florida State Census. Living in the household were one male over 21 (presumed to be A. B.), four males under 18 (presumed to be sons Francis M, Archibald M, George W, and Tillman A), three females over 18 (one is presumed to be Keturah, the other two uncertain), and one female under 18 (presumed to be daughter Laura).[7]

On 21 Dec 1868, Archabald[sic] B. Campbell's Madison County property was sold to James M. Plant for $900. Keturah Campbell acknowledged before Benj F. Tidwell, JP, that she relinquished of her dower rights to the land.[8] Shortly thereafter, they relocated once again, this time to Hillsborough County, Florida, near son Benjamin F who had recently been married.[9]

On 28 Jan 1869 under the Homestead Act of 1862, Archibald B Campbell of Hillsborough County, Florida, submitted Homestead Application No. 3901 for 80.05 acres in the N 1/2 of the NW 1/4, Section 8, Township 29 S of Range 16 East. The application, and his affidavit explaining that he did not appear because of distance, was certified in the Land Office of Tallahassee, Florida, on 20 Apr 1869. A receipt for $7.00 "being the amount of fee and compensation of Register and Receiver" was issued on the same day by the Receiver's Office in Tallahassee.[10]

Archibald Campbell died some time between Jan 1869 and Mar 1875 when Keturah, as widow of Archibald, received the Homestead Certificate for the land.[10] In the final account documents in his estate packet dated 25 Sept 1880, Keturah reported paying a Madison County Tax on 30 Dec 1869 and having provided 3 years schooling for Archibald M (b 1852), 6 years for George W (b 1854), and 7 years for Tillman A (b. 1856).[11]
