Thomas Rowlandson and Dorothy Portland were married on May 17, 1653/1654, in Amesbury or Salisbury, Essex County, Massachusetts.[1][2]
There isn't a record of Thomas's first marriage or his divorce to Martha Bradstreet but it can be implied by various records after the fact.
The first reference is undated in the source and may be undated in the Ipswich records which are generally not well organized. "Thomas Rowlandson, Hannah Rolfe et als. to Bridget Bradstreet, [Ipswich Deeds, I, 208–9]. Received of John Palmer of Rowley in behalf of Bridget Bradstreet, widow, £5 in full of all covenants, contracts, etc., between the deceased husband of said Bridget and Thomas Rowlison, Sr., concerning themselves and their children according to an agreement between Robert Lord and Thomas Rowlison, Jr., at Salisbury Court. Signed by Thomas Rawlison."[3]
Analyzing this: Date between 1655 and 1657. Humphrey Bradstreet (d. 1655), father of Martha Bradstreet and Thomas Rowlandson Sr. (d. 1657), father of Thomas Rowlandson Jr., had an agreement of monetary value as to the marriage of their children mentioned. Rowlandson Jr with Robert Lord (marshall of Ipswich) agreed to pay to the Bradstreets £5 which, Rowlandson Sr. paid on behalf of his son. This is quite a bit after the actual marriage and the annulment. Martha Bradstreet married William Beale about 1653 and Thomas Rowlandson m. Dorothy Portland in 1653.
Mar 1651 [50/51]. "Thomas Rolinson, proven impotent, on complaint of his wife, was to take counsel of Physicians forthwith, follow their advice, and report to court."[4]
30 : 7 (Sept): 1651: Daniell Rofe v. Thomas Rolinson, jr. Slander. Judgement for plaintiff.[6] Daniel Rolfe was husband of Hannah (Bradstreet) Rolfe, sister of Martha and son-in-law- of Bridget.
24 Nov (9) 1657. Wm. Beale v. Thomas Roulandson. For wrong done his wife under pretence of marriage, taking away her good name, and suing her mother at Hampton court. Appealed to Court of Assistants. [7]
In 1669, William Beale and Henry Codner came to blows over a cow and ended up in court. Codner called Beale an adulterous rouge.[8] In 1670, Martha was accused of having two husband's by a neighbor. "Whereas by Reson of anullitie of Marriage betwixt Thomas Rowlandson ye guilty & Martha Bradstrete ye innocent Som persons Take ockacion To abuse us in most revileing speches amongst others ..." [9]
