Clara Ruff was the daughter of Robert Ruff and Elizabeth Hall of London, England. Her baptism took place at St John Baptists, Leytonstone with her siblings just prior to departure from England.
She emigrated with her family to New Zealand on the ship 'Golconda' arriving Nelson in December 1859.
At 17, she married Thomas Gibbs, Labourer of Nelson, at her family home.
She and Thomas raised a family of 9 children.
Clara died age 65 and is buried at Wakapuaka Cemetery in Nelson.
