Sterling Ruffin was born June 1, 1767, at "Sweet Hall" Plantation, King William County, Virginia. [1]
Sterling Ruffin was a planter of Essex County, Virginia, who transferred his residence, in 1807, settling in Rockingham County, and dying in the county, of Caswell. Sterling married Alice Roane, who was of a family much distinguished in Virginia, and the first cousin of Spencer Roane, a chief justice of that state. [2]
Sterling's son, Thomas Ruffin was born November 16, 1787, in Virginia and was a lawyer and member of the State Legislature, 19 years Chief Justice, Speaker of the House of Commons, twice Judge of the Superior Court and Justice of the Supreme Court. [3]
Sterling Clack Ruffin died April 17, 1822, at the age of 54, in Milesville, Caswell County, North Carolina and is buried in the Ruffin and Miles Family Cemetery. [4]
