Lewis Runkle came to Johnson County, Indiana at an early age and "established a tannery below Edinburg. He was a son of Peter Runkle, who fought in a Virginia regiment during the Revolutionary War, and the latter was the son of John Runkle.... who originally came from Germany and settled in Culpeper County, Virginia.[1]
It has been stated, in error, that Lewis Runkle died in 1853 or 1858 and was buried at Runkles Cemetery in Davis County, Iowa. This statement appears to stem from an erroneous reading of the Hockersmith Bible. Lewis's minor children (but not Lewis) appear in the 1850 census in Johnson County, Indiana; and on 5 Feb. 1851 Thomas Runkle, guardian of the minor heirs of Lewis Runkle, deceased, made a report on their behalf.[2]
