Biography

The earliest known member of our line of the Rushton family was James Rushton, who was born about 1701. The Rushtons were Quakers, and lived in Chester or Bucks County Pennsylvania. James married Anne Trego, a daughter of Peter and Judith Mitchell Trego, who was born August 28, 1702 at Middletown in Chester County. James appears in various early records from Chester County. In a 1730 tax list, he appears living in Goshen Township there. James and his wife Anne appear in Quaker records for Chester Meeting dated 3-26-1729 when they requested a Certificate to Goshen Meeting. James received a warrant for 153½ acres of ground in Chester County on December 11, 1750. The same year he appears on a tax list for Goshen Township. The following year James and his wife Ann mortgaged land in Goshen Township to Benjamin Hickman by a mortgage filed in book H at page 195. In late 1751 or early 1752 James died in Chester County. This is confirmed by records of the Orphans Court from Chester County, as follow:

At an orphans court held and kept at Chester for the County of Chester, the 18th day of December anno dom 1753 Before Joseph Bonsall, John Mather and Thomas Morgan esqr’s present . . .

Anne Rushton, administratrix of James Rushton deceased, Exhibited to this Court the accounts of her Administration on the said deceased’s estate which being examined are allowed.

17th September 1754 On the Application of Joseph Gibbons its considered by the Court that he do bind out Robert, one of the sons of James Rushton deceased to such pson and on such terms as to him shall seem proper.

17, June 1755 Anne Rushton administratrix of the goods and chattels of James Rushton decease exhibited to this Court a supplement to the accounts of her administration of the said decease’s estate which being examined is allowed.

Records filed in the Orphans Court in 1754 name James’ wife Anne, and identify his children as William, the oldest son, John, Robert, Mary, Alice and Ann, who married Samuel Waln in 1747. After their daughter Ann died, her husband remarried in 1767 Sarah Steel, a widow with one child. Samuel and his new wife Sarah later took into their home the mother of his first wife, Ann Rushton, the widow of James Rushton. She lived with them until she died in 1791 in Chester County Pennsylvania, when she was nearly ninety years old.
