Biography

Ellen Russ was born in 1838 in East Lambrook, Kingsbury Episcopi parish, Somerset, England to Thomas Russ and Mary (Wildern) Russ. Her birth was registered in Langport, Somerset in the last quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Wildern.[1]

  • Her christening record has her name as Emily, but that may be a transcription error as all other records have Ellen.

Emily Russ, daughter of Thomas, a labourer, & Mary, residing at East Lambrook, was christened on 19 Sep 1838 at St James in East Lambrook.[2]

In 1841 Ellen Russ (age 2) lived at East Lambrook in Kingsbury Episcopi with her father Thomas (40, Ag Lab), mother Mary (41), and seven siblings: George (16), Mary (15), Daniel (13), Jesse (12), Charles (10), Simeon (5), and Walter (4).[3]

In 1851 Ellen Russ (age 12, Glover) lived at Water Street in East Lambrook with her father Thos (51, Labourer), mother Mary (53, Glover), and five siblings: Mary A (25, Glover), Daniel (23, Labourer), Jessie (22, Labourer), Simeon (15, Labourer), and Walter (13, Labourer).[4]

In 1861 Ellen Russ (age 22, Glover Leather) lived in East Lambrook with her father Thos (60, Agricultural Labourer), sister Mary A (35, Glover Leather), "brother" [nephew (Mary's illegitimate son)] Frederick (6), and lodger Susan Hussey (24, Glover Leather).[5]

Ellen Russ (of full age, Spinster, residing at East Lambrook, daughter of Thomas Russ, Labourer) and Henry Talbot (of full age, Single, Labourer, residing at East Lambrook, son of George Talbot, Labourer) were married on 1 Dec 1867 at St Martin in Kingsbury Episcopi - the witnesses were Dinah Russ & Henry Eves.[6] The marriage was registered in Langport in the last quarter of the year.[7]

Ellen and Henry had seven children:

In 1871 Ellen Talbott (age 32, Glover) lived in East Lambrook with her husband Henry (26, Ag Lab), son George (2), daughter Mary R (1), and niece Ellen Russ (14, Glover).[8]

In 1881 Ellen Talbot (age 43, Glover) lived in East Lambrook with her husband Henry (37, Ag Lab) and five children: George (12, Ag Lab), Mary (11, Glover), Sarah J (8, At School), Thomas (6, At School), and Ellen (3).[9]

In 1891 Ellen Talbot (age 53) lived in East Lambrook with her husband Henry (46, Farm Labourer) and four daughters: Mary (21, Glove Machinist), Sarah (18, Glove Machinist), Ellen (14, Scholar), and Annie (10, Scholar).[10]

Ellen's husband passed away in 1900.

In 1901 Ellen Talbot (age 61) lived in East Lambrook with her daughter Ellen (23, Glover) and three grandchildren: William James Talbot (8), Bert Talbot (6), and Bessie Stuckey (3).[11]

In 1911 Ellen Talbot (age 73) lived in East Lambrook with her son-in-law George Wilkins (32, Farm Labourer), daughter Ellen Wilkins (33, Kid Glove Maker), boarder [her grandson] William Talbot (18, Farm Labourer), and visitor [granddaughter] Bessie Stuckey (13).[12]
