Partial family tree for Russell - Drummond - Carrier - Long families

Specifically, John's paternal grandfather's sister, Catherine Russell, married William Harrison Long, whose father, Levi Long, had a second marriage with John Paul Russell's maternal great-grandmother, Nancy (Unknown) Carrier, which was also her second marriage. It helps to explain how his parents got to know each other and eventually marry. These families can be traced back to the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia and in Shenandoah County in particular, where they likely knew each other.

John graduated from George Washington University in 1924, with a degree in Medicine. He was also a member of the student council from 1922-1923, and 1923-1924, from the Medical School. He was a member of the Junior Prom committee in 1923. He was a member of the Alpha Zeta chapter of the Alpha Kappa Kappa medical school fraternity.

John was a medical doctor and entered the medical corps of the U. S. Army as a first lieutenant in 1925.[1]

He married Elsie Eleanor Wells on 24 Dec 1925 in District of Columbia, United States.[2]

In 1927, he was promoted to Captain in the Army.[1]

During his time in the Army, he was stationed in the Panama Canal Zone during the building of the canal. His wife stayed with him and their son, John Randolph "Randy" Russell, was born there on 18 Oct 1927. He was their only child.[3]

He retired from the Army in 1932 for disability in the line of duty.[1] Afterwards, he was chief of the industrial hygiene service of the California State Department of Public Health since its organization in 1937 and a director of the Western Industrial Physicians and Surgeons.[1] This group has now become the Western Occupational & Environmental Medical Association (WOEMA). The history of the organization shows John Russell as part of its early days.

Sometime after his retirement, and their move to California, he purchased land on Lake Tahoe, on the California side, for a small price, but the stipulation was that they had to build a house and live in it for a year, which he did. The cabin at Tahoe was later expanded twice, and upgraded by his son, Randy, in the 1980s, but kept many original items, including the footprint, chimney and fireplace, and wooden cross-beams in the loft. The cabin has remained in the family for four generations, to this date, and is mainly used for vacationing at the lake.[3]

He passed away at the age of 41, of heart disease, on 17 Mar 1942 in Alameda County, California, United States.[1] He is buried in Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno, California.[4]
