Biography

Andrew was born between 1765 and 1779, based on the age range in his 1810 U.S. Census enumeration and his eligibility for the militia in 1797. He may be a descendant of one of the Andrew Russells from Augusta County, Virginia. His father-in-law Francis Hardgrave was originally from Augusta County, Virginia.

He was commissioned an ensign in the 6th Regiment, Kentucky Militia on 19 September 1797.[1]

He married Hannah Hardgrave on 28 June 1799 in Lincoln County, Kentucky.[2]

In 1801, he was one of the commissioners appointed to plan the town of Somerset, Kentucky and arrange the location of the public buildings.[3]

He was a private in Tunstall Quarles' Company of Infantry, 2nd Regiment Kentucky Volunteer Militia from 1 September 1812 to 30 March 1813.[4] His regiment constructed Fort Jennings in Ohio, and then remained there on garrison duty for several months.[5] They then headed north to Put-in-Bay, Ohio.[6] When their term of service was nearly over, they went to Cincinnati, Ohio and were discharged in March 1813.[7]
