John Russell
John's origin is uncertain, but he was perhaps the John Russell baptized in Cretingham, Suffolk on 25 Apr 1697-8, son of George.[1] unknown according to Anderson. However, circumstantial evidence points to his ancestry at "Ipswich or environs."[2]
The following is from Savage:
JOHN, Cambridge, freem. 3 Ma. 1636, town clk. in 1645 (vol. 3, p. 591) constable in 1648, brought, no doubt, s. John, b. a 1626, H. Dorothy, the wid. of Mr. Smith, and the s. succeed. him as min. By former w. he had also Philip, b. perhaps in Eng. perhaps at our Cambridge; rem. 1659 to Hadley, and d. 8 May 1680, aged 83.[3]
John married twice.
Children of John and 1st wife Phebe:
Presbyterian
John first settled at Cambridge in 1635, where he remained until at least 1650.[2] He removed to Wethersfield by 1655, then to Hadley (then Connecticut, now Massachusetts) by 1661, where his son John had settled after finishing college.[2]
The church at Wethersfield had been headed by Rev. Henry Smith. When Smith died in 1648, John Russell, Jr. was chosen to take his place. John Russell, Sr. followed his son to Wethersfield and also married to widow of Rev. Smith.[4]
John died on May 8, 1680 at Hadley, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.[2]
Disambiguation:Many have confused John Russell (abt.1610-abt.1676) of Woburn, Massachusetts with John Russell (abt.1597-1680) (1597-1680) of Cambridge, Massachusetts and Wethersfield, Connecticut For reference, John Russell of Cambridge and Wethersfield, Connecticut is well described in "An Account of Some of the Descendants of John Russell, the Emigrant", by Gurdon Wadsworth Russell available at archive.org (pp 109-116).
Confessions to Rev Thomas Shepard, for "Katherine, Mrs. Russel's maid." (Editor's identify John's wife as Elizabeth; but Anderson provides calls her , but Anderson identifies her as Phoebe Collins.)
Errors in Pope and Savage. Anderson cautions that both Pope and Snow place this John Russell at Woburn (no evidence he ever lived there), and Pope later admitted the Woburn John Russell was a different man.[2]
