Journey Into Century Three, Volume One, "The Journey Begun," 1785-1844, By Glenn Alfred Toomey, 1988: "The post bicentennial history of First Baptist Church, Whitesburg, Tennessee, organized as the Bent Creek Baptist Church June 12, 1785 Among charter members: George Russell - Mrs. George Russell Members of the first five years: # 73, Russell, George and wife: William, Elizabeth, and Jemima. George was a captain in the Revolutionary War. Two land grants of 900 acres on the northside of the Nolachucky River. He was one of 13 commissioners from Watauga Association (political) William gave his name to "Russellville." He received two land grants totalling 500 acres on the northside of Nolachucky. Revolutionary Soldier. Note by Lilly Martin, Aug 2022: George Russell and wife Elizabeth Bean, and their son William Russell, who gave his name to the community of Russellville, and George's daughter Jemima Russell Horner, and her sister Elizabeth Russell Horner. Those are the identities of the people listed in the above BOOK by Toomey. If that book is correct, then William Russell, Major, who fought in the war of 1812, was indeed the son of George Russell and Elizabeth Bean.

Source of birth place and birth date: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VRR4-ZL4, is a source of a christening of Lydia Russell on Sept 29, 1726 at North Farnham Parish, Richmond, Virginia for Lydia as d/o Joseph Russell and his wife Sarah. In the same set of christening records, same location, is a record for George 11-30-1720, who is recorded as the son of George Russell and Mary.

The man named George Russell-2021 was not christened on 11-30-1720 , because his sister is Lydia Russell, who married William Bean. If George and Lydia are siblings, they must come from the same father, but in the Farnham christening records, the George and Lydia there do not come from the same parents, who are recorded in the original church records.

There were many Russell families in colonial Virginia, and those Farnham christening records are not for this family, who married the Bean family.

Source that George Russell is the brother of Lydia Russell (Mrs. William Bean): "41 History of he Am. People by Morrison p211, DAR Magazine Oct 1974 p 781, The Overmountain Men by Alderman p 118 131 133, Roster of North Carolina Soldiers in the Am. Rev. by NC DAR". This explains the before mentioned sources: "(Source: "Annuals of Tennessee", by Ramsey)From "William Bean Pioneer of Tennessee and his Descendants", by Jamie Ault Grady: "William Bean and Lydia were the first permanent settlers in the new country, now the state of Tennessee. It was here that Russell Bean, first white child of Tennessee was born. William Bean was a leader and a man of means. Many relatives and friends from Virginia soon settled around Bean, among them were John and George Russell, brothers of Mrs. Bean."From the same source also found in Annals of Tennessee: "William Bean,Commissioner in Watauga Settlement 1772. "The Watauga settlers, in convention assembled, elected as Commissioners thirteen citizens. They were Charles Robertson, Zack Isabell, John Sevier, James Smith, Jacob Brown, William Bean, John Jones, George Russell, Jacob Womack, Robert Lucas, William Tatham".

The above mentioned sources proves that Lydia Russell Bean, and George Russell-2021, and John Russell-26693 were all siblings.

The source of the religion (Baptist) and where the children of George Russell-2021 were born at is as follows: Elizabeth Russell was listed in Capt. George Bean's Company in Grainger Co., TN. in 1799. (Early East Tennessee Tax List by : M.B. Curtis 1964). She asked to be dismissed from Bent Creek Baptist Church in Jan. 1800. (Minutes Bent Creek Baptist Church 1784-1844). Their known Children were born Pittsylvania Co., Va. and in the Watauga Settlement, Washington Dist. and Co., North Carolina. (Now Tennessee).

"Watauga Association". Please look that up on wikipedia and see that John Sevier, William Bean and George Russell were all key residents.

William Bean-317 was the brother in law of George Russell-2021. William married George's sister Lydia Russell-788, and George married William's sister Elizabeth Bean-454.

John Sevier was the son of Valentine Sevier-76, the husband of Jemima Russell (the subject of this profile), who is a sister to both George and Lydia.

The common denominator in the Bean-Russell-Sevier family is the "Watauga Association" which is a very specific time and location, which makes the identification of George, Lydia and Jemima, as siblings and neighbors, easily understood.

Lilly Martin June 25, 2022.

Captain George Russell was born circa 1720 in what is now Loudoun County, Virginia, the son of William Russell. George survived the Battle of Kings Mountain on October 7, 1780 in what was then rural Cherokee County, South Carolina. It was a decisive victory in South Carolina for the Patriot militia over the Loyalist militia in the Southern campaign of the American Revolutionary War. The battle took place nine miles south of the present-day town of Kings Mountain, now in North Carolina.

Captain Russell married in Pittsylvania, Virginia, Elizabeth "Eliza" Bean, daughter of William and Margaret Bean of Northumberland County, Virginia. In 1769, George and Elizabeth/Eliza migrated with Eliza's brother, Captain William Bean and his wife Lydia Russell, to the Watauga Settlement in Tennessee.

Captain George Russell established the community of Russellville in 1785. He had been granted a large tract of land in Greene Co, North Carolina. The location of the land became part of Grainger County, Tennessee, and later Hamblen County, Tennessee. Located along U.S. Route 11E, it lies approximately midway between Whitesburg and Morristown. During the American Civil War, Lieutenant General James Longstreet established a headquarters in the Nenney House just after the Battle of Bean's Station. The house still stands and has been converted into The Longstreet Museum. [1]

George and Eliza lived on German Creek, in Grainger County, Tennessee, where In the fall of 1796, he was killed by Indians in a raid and left in the woods. The male body that is presumed to have been his was found and buried in the cemetery of Bent Creek Baptist Church.

George Russell-2021 is the brother of Lydia Russell-788, who married William Bean-317.

In order to connect George and Lydia on wikitree, you must first name their father.

The Allen Papers at the McClung Library has the following on the Bean line:

Matthew Bains married Margaret Hatton at Lancaster Monthly Meeting in England. They sailed for America in 1687 on the ship Chester. Matthew, Margaret and two of their children (Thomas and Timothy) died at sea. Their surviving children, William and Eleanor, wanted to stay in America. William's children were: Joseph, Matthew, James, Timothy, Thomas (infant who died), William, Jacob, Elizabeth and Eleanor. They were all born in the early 1700s.

The International Genealogical Index (IGI) shows William and Elizabeth Bean in Northumberland County, Virginia, the ancestor of the Beans who married into the Russell family and then three times into the family of Elizabeth Allred and William Horner. So far this is probably not too clear, but I'll try to

clarify, but the this line migrates from Northumberland County, Virginia, to Pittsylvania and Halifax Counties, Virginia, and to North Carolina. This BEAN-RUSSELL group/family was involved in the Watauga Association.

William Russell and Elizabeth Bean had three children who married children of William Horner and Elizabeth Allred: Elizabeth Russell who married to John Horner, Jr.; Jemima Russell who married George Horner (this family went to Hickman and later Perry County, TN); Lewis R. Russell who married Elizabeth Horner (migrated to Arkansas). The wife, Elizabeth Bean, of William Russell, was the sister of Captain William Bean (who married George Russell's sister, Lydia). This Elizabeth Bean and William Bean were the children of William Bean who was born 1720, Northumberland County, Virginia.

I believe his parents should be detached. He's shown as being born in Virginia, yet his parents lived their lives in England. Also, he is not mentioned in the will of William's father (who died after William).
