Catherine Thomas, as the widow of Edmund Thomas, was eligible to have the land surveyed and granted to her based on the warrant initially issued to her husband. The marriage is inferred from this land transaction since married women could not own or convey property, but a widow could. Further the dates given an indication of a time frame for the death of Edmund Thomas. The warrant was issued and signed over to him on 12 January 1725/1726 and on 5 August 1727 Catherine Thomas had the land surveyed. Between 12 January 1725/1726 and 5 August 1727 Edmund Thomas died. It is still unknown to which Thomas family Edmund belonged.

In 1763, Catherine Thomas, mother of Jacob, and Jacob conveyed land to Zachariah Lewis. The original record for this land, found in Fauquier County, Virginia Deed Book 1, pg. 414, is as follows: Grant, Demise and to Farm Let unto the said Zacharias Lewis a Certain Tract of Parcel of Land situate in the Parish of Hamilton in the County aforesaid containing three hundred acres more or less and is the land that was granted unto the said Catherine Holtzclaw by the name of Catherine Thomas of Stafford County she then being the Widow and relict of _________Thomas dec'd by patent from the Proprietors Office of the Northern Neck of Virginia bearing Date the 22d day of January 1727/8. [Fauquier Co. Deed Book 1, pg. 414]. Note: Catherine Holtzclaw sold her land to Zachariah Lewis on the same day that her son, Jacob Thomas, sold his land to Zachariah Lewis. The land was originally owned by Edmund Thomas and it consisted of 615 acres, it was located near to the Germantown tract and next to the land of Robert "King" Carter.

Catherine is the way it is spelled on the marriage records I found for her. The surname Thomas shows up on the Sons of the American Revolution application. She may have been married a second time. Russell is definitely her maiden name, shown on the marriage record & in a newspaper article from the Virginia Gazette.

Her death location must come from family tradition. I found no records with that information. Probably we should just put “Virginia.”

Thomas Russell-1 and Russell-2181 appear to represent the same person because:

Merge requests have already been made for both parents and brother. Parents and brother are the same on both profiles, as as birth year and birthplace and year of death. However, there are a couple things that need to be ironed out before the merger. Of minor importantance does her name start with C or K? Of major importance, did she die in Prince William County, VA or Fauquier County, VA? Was one county created out of another? And of utmost importance, which profile should survive? I take her her maiden name was Russell, not Thomas Russell. Was Thomas a middle name? I saw this was previously an unmerged match, and I can see why with this conflicting info, but since it's clear both profiles have the same parents and the same brother and birth info, this is clearly the same person and ought to be merged as soon as details can be worked out.
